This position serves as the agency’s primary staff resource for the visual arts field and manages a diverse portfolio of responsibilities that include grant administration, applicant support, statewide field engagement, program development, and on-site art gallery operations. This is a full-time position based in Montgomery, AL.

Attention, Birmingham area poets: Apply to become the City’s 2027-2028 Poet Laureate.

The City of Birmingham Poet Laureate will serve as an ambassador for poetry in Birmingham. This is an honorary position and roles and responsibilities include making local appearances, facilitating public and educational programs, and building advocacy and community through poetry. The poet laureate will receive an honorarium of $5,000 over the course of their term.

Discover the craft of traditional spoonmaking during an upcoming hands-on workshop with Alabama-based artist Orran Scruggs.

- August 24 at Old Alabama Town, Montgomery
- August 25 at Opelika Public Library, Opelika
- August 26 at Pebble Hill, Auburn University
- August 27 at Tallassee Community Library, Tallassee
- August 28 at Dadeville Public Library, Dadeville

Scruggs is the current Traditional Artist-in-Residence at Auburn University, presented by the Alabama Folklife Association and Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities at Pebble Hill.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: Applications are now open for the 2027 YoungArts National Arts Competition, one of the nation’s most prestigious opportunities for young creatives. Students between the ages of 15-18 can apply in ten disciplines – including classical music, dance, design, film, jazz, photography, theater, visual arts, voice, and writing.

Winners receive cash awards of up to $10,000, mentorship from accomplished artists, a lifetime of professional support, scholarship opportunities, and more.
