What an honor for MMI's Color Guard to represent the Alabama Community College System at Governor Ivey's America 250 celebration today at the Capitol. It was a great day to reflect on the liberty we enjoy nearing our nation's semiquincentennial.

Cadets were in special company in Montgomery, sharing the stage with Jimmy Rane (MMI '64), Sen. Arthur Orr, Alabama lead singer Randy Owen, and the 151st Army Band.

Special thanks to SFC Kent James for coming out of retirement to accompany our Color Guard one last time! Birmingham & Montgomery folks, you might spot MMI on the ABC3340 and WAKA8 newscasts tonight.

Governor Kay Ivey recently signed a proclamation recognizing Maritime Month, and multiple representatives from Alabama's community colleges were present, including from the ACCS, Bishop State Community College, LBW Community College and Reid State Community College!

Earlier this year, the ACCS announced a $30 million investment funded by the U.S. Navy to modernize and expand maritime workforce training at four Alabama community colleges, including the three mentioned above and Coastal Alabama Community College.

The funding will enable the colleges to expand their submarine manufacturing and shipbuilding training programs and assist the Navy, in building one Columbia-class and two Virginia-class submarines each year. Achieving this production target requires a dramatic expansion of America’s maritime industrial workforce, and Alabama’s community colleges are positioned to play a central role in delivering that talent pipeline.

The ACCS expects to produce more than 800 skilled trades professionals annually. These students will fill high-demand skilled trades that provide strong career opportunities and play a vital role in our national security.

Bevill State Community College was recently awarded a $10,000 Community Service Grant from Alabama House District 13 Representative Rep. Greg Barnes, AL HD13. The community college will invest these funds into the campus police department to help further enhance safety and security measures for students, instructors, and staff.

We could not do what we do without the continued support of the Alabama State Legislature. This investment reflects the ongoing commitment to advancing safe, supportive learning environments across our communities.
