Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department Providing fire protection and emergency medical response to the residents of Montgomery, NY. Est.1810 That basic training is only the beginning.

We are all volunteer and have been active and dedicated to our community since 1810. We're the oldest volunteer fire department in Orange County, having been organized on March 6th, 1810 with the appointment of the first three village fire wardens. We protect the residents of the Village of Montgomery as well as portions of the Town of Montgomery, totaling almost 17,000 citizens. Our district cove

rs three large schools, a river, numerous lakes and ponds, and the Orange County Airport. We also provide mutual aid to surrounding fire districts (as they do to us) to increase capabilities during large incidents. We have about 40 active members who respond from home, work, or wherever they may be. Each of our new members is at a minimum required to attend 90+ hours of the basic Firefighter 1 training provided by The New York State Department of State’s Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC). Also, new members may choose to take the basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) course which requires 140+ hours. The department holds regular weekly drills that can run up to three hours long. Members also regularly attend OFPC outreach classes at the Orange County Fire Training Center. Additionally, we bring in specialized training during the year. Over the past year we've had special training in Ice Rescue, Vehicle Extrication, and Thermal Imaging Cameras.

On 5/8/26 at 10:49am we were called to a porch fire at 15 Riverview St. While responding 911 updated with a report of possible entrapment. Car 1 arrived on scene at 10:51 and immediately requested a second alarm. After speaking with a resident it was confirmed that everyone was out of the house. That resident was alerted to the fire when he saw a neighbor running down his driveway. Units on scene attempted to knock down the fire and advance hose lines inside the residence. Unfortunately, while trying to advance into the structure, the building started showing signs of potential collapse. Units were pulled out of the building before the roof collapsed and then the 1 side of the house also collapsed. Exterior operations continued throughout the day until all units were clear of the fire at 7:26 pm.

There are so many people to thank on a large incident like this. On scene along with us we had the Montgomery Fire Department, Coldenham Fire Department, City of Newburgh Fire Department, Maybrook Fire Department, Pine Bush Fire Department, Vails Gate Fire Department, Orange Lake Fire Department, Washingtonville Fire Department 36-12, 36-6, 36-1, the Orange County Fire Investigation Team, Walden Police Department, Orange County Sheriff's Office, State Police, Walden DPW, Walden Building Department, Town of Montgomery EMS, Wallkill Volunteer Ambulance Corp., Pine Bush Ambulance, Greenville Ambulance, Town of Newburgh EMS, and Town of Wallkill EMS, and Orange County EMS Coordinators (EMS-1 and EMS-2). We would also like to thank the Walden Elementary School who had staff help with the scene and also dropped off some food for everyone.

Fortunately, all residents were able to escape the house with no injuries. There were three firefighters that were transported to the hospital with non life threatening situations and one additional firefighter that sustained minor injuries that was treated on scene and continued with their efforts to contain the blaze.

We are saddened to see the total destruction of the home and wish all the best to the family in their recovery. There has been a GoFundMe set up to assist them if you wish to help out.

On 5/8/26, Montgomery units responded mutual aid with Car 1 and Truck 221 to the Walden Fire District for a working structure fire beginning at 1053. Crews arrived to the 1 side well involved with heavy fire throughout the building and assisted with deploying handlines and completing primary searches. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke conditions inside and found the stairs had burned out. Units remained on scene assisting operations until 1431. Our thoughts are with the homeowners and all those affected by this fire.

Last night our Department held its 1st Annual Past Member Reunion. Current and past members gathered to share stories, photographs, and plenty of laughs at the very place they once dedicated their time to protecting and maintaining. It was a great opportunity to reconnect, reflect on the history of the Department, and honor the contributions of those who helped shape it.

This will be an annual event, and we hope to see even more in attendance next year.

In attendance were Past Chief Bob Reynolds Sr, Past Chief Tom Joyce, Past Chief Bob Pressler, Assistant Chief George Hoeffner, Chief Robert Reynolds Jr, Dan Bennet, Assistant Chief Mike Childress, Royce Durgin, Andres Obando, Doug Hantush, Kathleen Howell, Jason Koch, Amanda OConnell, Charlie Quinn, Chris Gironda, Shawn Carson, Mike Gironda, Sean Hickey, Mike Crana, Dennis Stanton, Rob Lanspery, Dan Klett, Steve Malley, Connor Klett, Chris Stark, Past Chief Brian Quinn, and Rick Malley. Not pictured but also attended were Joel Marchant, Jeff Stedner and Bryan Giudice.

Members also signed a commemorative plaque made by Jeff Stedner of Steddy Burn Creatives

Today is the mock disaster demonstration at Valley Central High School. All participating agencies are involved in a coordinated drill alongside many community groups, highlighting the real-life impact and dangers of driving under the influence.
