True independence starts with confidence.

When blind and visually impaired students enter college, they face a completely new environment. The ultimate goal of the Prep Zone program is to ensure they do not face it alone or unprepared.

The program is designed to build self-advocacy skills, help students confidently navigate college campuses, and ultimately prepare them for successful future employment.

It is about giving students the tools to believe in themselves and achieve their dreams.

Congratulations to April Turner on receiving the 2026 NASHIA Augusta Cash Visionary Leadership Award! 🏆 This honor recognizes her incredible leadership and contributions to the field of traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Through her dedication, April has strengthened Alabama’s TBI system, expanded vital partnerships, and increased access to resources and support for individuals and families impacted by brain injury. Her work continues to move Alabama’s TBI services forward.

The AT AL Conference brought together professionals, advocates, and families for two days focused on assistive technology driving everyday independence!

From hands-on tech demos to inspiring insights from speakers like Cory Lee, an accessible travel influencer and Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS) experts, the event showcased how AT creates access in school, work, home, and community settings.

At Children's Rehabilitation Service (CRS), we provide children with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools to help open up a world of connection.

Recently CRS Speech Language Pathologists Amanda Hamner and Dianna Penn, conducted AAC training titled “Unlocking Potential with AAC: From Mindset to Meaningful Communication.” The primary goal was to help professionals deepen their understanding of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and learn practical strategies to support individuals with complex communication needs.

Attendees represented a variety of schools, universities, clinics, and private practices from across the area, including Montgomery Public Schools, Elmore County Public Schools, Auburn University at Montgomery, Faulkner University, Easterseals, Little Peach Pediatric Therapy, The Bailey Center, and a couple of independently owned speech therapy practices, among others.

Suga's Lemonade lemonade truck provided a fun and refreshing break in the morning and gave everyone an opportunity to connect with other professionals in the community.

For a visually impaired student, the transition to college is so much more than just keeping up with the academics. It is about the tiny, daily moments that everyone else takes for granted.

How do you navigate a massive, crowded campus dining hall? How do you cook a meal in a noisy dorm kitchen? How do you make sure your assistive tech doesn't crash right before a mid-term exam?

These are the real hurdles that make or break the college experience.

That is exactly why we designed Prep Zone. We wanted a space where students can get hands-on experience with independent living, master their tech, and actually plan for life after graduation before they ever step foot on campus.
