Children in the Bidders Box during a filming of the "Junior Auction" show at WSFA-TV in Montgomery. The auctioneer is host Curt "Pops" Blair, who was an announcer and news anchor on WSFA-TV and hosted various children's programs in the 1950s and 1960s. The show was sponsored by Golden Flake and aired on several Alabama television stations. To play, children collected empty potato chip bags, which they used to bid on prizes.

**PEOPLE OF MGM** Juanita Halstead was born in Montgomery in 1917. Her husband of 62 years, Foy Halstead, taught her to fly and she earned her license in 1954. She helped found the Alabama Chapter of The Ninety-Nines, International Organization of Women Pilots. She served as Chapter Chairman several times as well as The 99s Southeast Section Governor. In 1966 she flew in her first All Women Transcontinental Air Derby, aka "Powder Puff Derby" and went on to compete in 15 air races, logging more than 5,000 hours in the air. Juanita was a single and multi-engine instrument rated pilot. Her last major aviation activity was as judge for the 1993 Air Race Classic. She and her co-pilot, Nancy Beeland of Greenville, became known as Alabama's 'Flying Grandmothers.' She passed away in 1995 at the age of 78.

Pictures shown here were taken in 1970.

This young lad is Jim Lovelace. He grew up in Montgomery and went to Lanier High School in the early 1940s. These pictures were taken around that same time (one was in 1942). We are trying to place where these photos might have been taken. Do you recognize any of the buildings or landmarks in either photo?

OUR COLLECTION

This organ, a part of our collection, was played at First Presbyterian Church by Augusta Woodruff, known to many as Miss Gussie. The church was founded in 1824 and dedicated in 1847, the same year that Montgomery became the State Capital.

Miss Gussie also operated a private grammar school at 201 Alabama Street in Montgomery from 1868 until 1928, when the school closed. She died in December, the year before the school's closure.

In 1987, the Alabama Artists Gallery was located in the Klein building at 1 Dexter Ave with the offices of the Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA). The gallery hosted several shows that year. These photos highlight some of the works from various shows in 1987.

The Alabama Artists Gallery is now known as the Georgine Clark Alabama Artists Gallery and is located in the RSA Tower in downtown Montgomery. Their current exhibit is "Celebration of Alabama Arts" which shines a spotlight on arts and creativity in Alabama and on individuals who make significant and impactful contributions to our state’s rich cultural landscape. Featuring meaningful objects from each honoree’s career, this exhibition sheds light on the myriad ways these Alabamians champion the arts. The honorees served as co-curators for their sections, selecting items that encapsulated pivotal moments in their careers or artifacts of personal significance, which gives the viewer a behind-the-scenes look into their artistic journeys.

This show is on view until June 26th. Their gallery is free and open to the public, Monday–Friday, 1:00 pm–4:45 pm. Go check out these wonderful Alabama artists!
