The days become shorter as we head from fall towards winter. At the same time, lots of young wildlife are heading out on their own. As baby mammals become large enough and gain independence, they begin to venture further and further from their dens. Some species, like squirrels and skunks, are booted out like recent graduates 😬
Sadly, this increase in activity from young animals means you will see an increase in deceased and injured animals on the road.
The kindest thing humans can do for wildlife this time of year is to slow down. They're just looking for food before the chill sets in, and a place to call home. Let's help them get there šŸ’š

Hey, humans. It's me, your friendly neighborhood deer.

This weekend, you'll "fall back," enjoy an extra hour of coffee, and get ready for winter. But when you change your clocks, you also change the rules of the road.

Your evening drive home suddenly happens during my family's dinner time.

Here’s the reality when Daylight Saving Time ends:

* Our worlds collide: Your 5 PM commute is now at dusk—the exact time my deer friends and I are most active.
* Love is in the air (and it's dangerous): It's peak mating season for us. Bucks are chasing does, and we are not paying attention to crosswalks.
* The risk is real: The chances of a deer-vehicle collision can increase by over 16% in the weeks following the time change. Annually, these accidents cause billions of dollars in damage and tragic injuries.

We both want to get home safe. Here's how you can help:

* Stay alert at dawn and dusk: These are our prime-time hours. Your commute now cuts right through them.
* One of us means more of us: We travel in groups. If you see one deer cross the road, brake safely and expect others to follow.
* Don't veer for deer: Swerving can lead to a more dangerous accident. Brake firmly and stay in your lane.
* Use your high beams: On dark roads, high beams can help you spot the reflection in our eyes much sooner.

I don't want to be a statistic. You don't want a wrecked car or worse. Let's look out for each other.

Drive like our lives depend on it.

"YOUR CLOCKS CHANGED. MY RUSH HOUR DIDN'T. PLEASE SLOW DOWN."
