Property Insurance Association of Louisiana rating determines what you pay for Homeowners Insurance

For those of you who aren't familiar with what this rating means.....here's a concise breakdown:

We are required every 5 years to fill out a packet of paperwork from Property Insurance Association of Louisiana (PIAL). The packet has numerous attachments that have to be sent back with it within 45 days of our receiving it. PIAL then visits us and rates the department on firefighter training, call response, equipment, communications, water supply, truck inventory, trucks and personnel that we have on scene at structural alarms, along with many other things.

The rating scale is 1 - 10. The higher the number you get, the WORSE your rating is. We currently have a class 5 rating, which is GREAT for a rural, volunteer fire department. The rating determines how much the citizens and businesses in our fire district pay for their insurance. For instance, a department who holds a class 10 rating, everyone in their fire district pays the maximum rate for their insurance. The lower the rating number, the lower the cost of your insurance.

This is a comprehensive process, which is in essence an 'audit' of how our fire department, water districts, training facilities and communications center operates on a day to day basis.

Most citizens don't realize the daily efforts put forth by their local fire departments and the work that it involves in order to keep a fire department running smoothly and efficiently. Volunteer fire departments are held to the same standards as full time paid departments and our training, response, etc. is rated the same as if we were a full time paid department.

I copied this from another Fire Department in Louisiana. Remember these are all volunteers including the Board Members that govern the Fire Department.
