Since the early 1980s, the Stevens family has opened their farm to an invasion of 5th grade students for the annual Stevens Farm Tour, sponsored and organized by the Montgomery County Soil & Water Conservation District. Staff at the Conservation District wrangled volunteers, secured donations and grants, sponsored a meal for 150 attendees and volunteers, organized stations, and fed 150+ attendees and volunteers each year. We have reached out to thousands of students over the years and are now seeing the third generation. We are also so very thankful for all our partners and volunteers that have helped us reach so many students throughout the years including Missouri Department of Conservation, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Farm Service Agency, Ameren, MFA, Quail Forever/Pheasants Forever, Warren County Soil & Water Conservation District, Lincoln County Soil & Water Conservation District, and Pike County Soil & Water Conservation District.
On May 13th, another batch of energetic 5th graders invaded Stevens Farm for an educational day on the farm filled with stations on topics such as farm safety, electrical safety, pollinators, furs, livestock, fishing, soils & terraces, streams, and soil health. After lunch, the students were treated to a visit from Lucas Brass, the soil health maniac. Special thanks to Jason Bolte and Jordon Beshears for cooking the burgers and Betty Lowry and Betty Schipper for coming in and helping us serve lunch. We would also like to thank Uncle Ray’s for the donation of potato chips for all attendees. MFA stepped up to the plate and sent some help for the fishing and farm safety stations and the use of tent canopies for the stations. We can use all the help we can get with the fishing station.
It truly takes a village and the Montgomery County Soil & Water Conservation District appreciates the continued support of all our partners and volunteers that make this event possible.
