After almost 39 years in law enforcement, Police Chief Dave Hober today announced his retirement. Hober has served nearly 12 years with the Monterey Police Department, starting in 2015. Before arriving in Monterey, he served 25 years with the San Jose Police Department starting in 1988, and he served a year and a half as a Special Agent with the FBI from 1996-1997. Hober will be transitioning to an opportunity in the private sector, which he described as aligning with a retirement from policing that was on the near horizon.

Chief Hober stated, “Serving as Monterey’s Chief of Police has been the distinct privilege and honor of my professional life. The men and women of the Monterey Police Department, both sworn officers and support staff, are among the most dedicated, compassionate, and skilled public servants in the profession. . . I extend my deepest gratitude to the members of the department and the residents of Monterey for the privilege of serving this exceptional community. With the strength and leadership of Assistant Chief Mike Bruno and our current command staff, I step away knowing the future of the Monterey Police Department is in outstanding hands.”

The City of Monterey is grateful for Chief Hober’s service to the Monterey community. “Under Chief Hober’s leadership, our police department has exemplified what it means to deliver community-based law enforcement. We will miss his expertise, leadership, professionalism, and collaborative approach,” stated City Manager Dante Hall. He added, “Our residents can be confident that the outstanding command staff and personnel of the Monterey Police Department will continue to ensure that Monterey is a safe and well-protected community.”

Chief Hober will officially conclude his service on November 15, 2026. Over the next few months, the City will begin identifying his successor to ensure a smooth and effective transition.

Join the City for a Budget Brew Drop-in Session at a local coffeehouse throughout Monterey to share feedback and learn about the City’s budget as well as the Roadmap to Resilience! ☕️🍵

The first session will take place this Friday, September 4 at Monterey Donuts from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. 🍩☕️

These sessions are part of the Roadmap to Resilience framework. The future-focused Roadmap will guide Monterey as we navigate the City’s budget deficit and work decisively toward long-term fiscal stability and a balanced budget for FY 2027-2028 and beyond.

The Fall 2026 Cohort of the First City Academy is accepting applications! 🏛️

The Academy is designed for City of Monterey residents to learn about city programs and services, how local government operates, and to find more ways to be involved in the community. To apply, please visit Monterey.gov/firstcityacademy

The Fall Cohort consists of 7 sessions on Thursdays from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm that begin in September 3 and run through October 15. Applications are open until August 24.

Just in time for Car Week, the sea lions are back at San Carlos Beach! 🦭🏎️ To protect both our human and animal visitors, San Carlos Beach is temporarily closed.

Our beaches are a rest point for these sea lions between their breeding grounds in the Channel Islands and the waters of Northern California.

Please remember to stay 150 feet back from the sea lions. They are protects under the Marina Mammal Protection Act and it is against the law to harass, pursue, or injure or cause a potential injury to them.
