The American Legion LA Sheriff's Star Post #309 was chartered and incorporated in 1927 by LA County Sheriff’s Department military veterans of World War I.

Today, we said goodbye to our good friend, John “Ron” Nybakken.

On what would have been his 91st birthday, Ron’s family, friends, and fellow members of the gathered not to mourn his passing, but to celebrate a life defined by friendship, dedication, and service to others.

Amid the tears were sounds of laughter, as stories were shared and memories brought Ron’s unmistakable spirit back into the room. There were stories of friendship, service, and the moments that made Ron so special to so many people.

Happy 91st Birthday, Ron. Rest easy, friend, your watch is over, but your legacy lives on. 🇺🇸

THE VETERANS BALL IS BACK, AND THIS YEAR WE’RE CHANGING THINGS UP! 🇺🇸

For our 99th Anniversary Veterans Ball, we’re bringing a whole new energy to the celebration. This year is about honoring our veterans, enjoying great company, sharing some laughs, and having a great time together!

🎉 Taking center stage is Ivan Pecel, the high energy comedy juggler seen on America’s Got Talent, MTV, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, as well as the Las Vegas Strip.

His motto says it all:

🔥 “MAKING JUGGLING TOLERABLE.” 🔥

On August 20, 2026, John “Ron” Nybakken transferred to Post Everlasting and is now in the arms of our Lord.

Ron lived a life defined by service, honor, and devotion to others. He proudly served our nation in the United States Navy during the Korean War, and later continued his life of service with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department where he served honorably until retiring at the rank of Sergeant.

A steadfast supporter of his fellow veterans, Ron remained deeply committed to the veteran community. He served as Past Commander and Adjutant of STAR Post 309 and was honored as a Life Member of The American Legion

Today, we celebrate Ron’s remarkable life and enduring legacy of service to his country, his community, his fellow veterans, and the law enforcement family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his beloved wife, Charlotte, and the entire Nybakken family during this difficult time.

“Fair winds and following seas, Shipmate. We have the watch.”

Rest in eternal peace, Ron. Your service is complete, but your legacy will live on.

What an incredible start to the donation drive! Our family showed up in full force to support this campaign. Because of these efforts, we’ll be able to provide meaningful relief to junior enlisted families experiencing food scarcity. 🇺🇸💙

As we close out 2025, STAR Post 309 looks back with pride and gratitude.

This year, our Post continued its mission of supporting our and their families. From raising awareness of veteran su***de through the Be The One campaign, to investing in our future leaders through our Children & Youth initiatives, to advocating for our active Reservists who serve with the , and honoring Veterans for their service and sacrifice, STAR Post 309 remained committed to service above self.

The year culminated with our 2025 Veterans Ball, which proved to be our best one yet, a powerful night of remembrance, connection, and community.

As we look ahead to 2026, we are excited for what’s to come as STAR Post 309 celebrates its 99th year of service. Thank you to our members, families, partners, and supporters for standing with us every step of the way.

Fox NFL's Sunday wants to host and honor veterans. Scan the QR code to attend the filming on Sunday morning. It's going to be on the Fox lot on Sunday.

If you're a veteran or active duty personnel, use that QR Code; it will send Fox an email. You will get instructions on how you and your family can come and take part. And it's going to be just a fun Sunday. We get to have breakfast with the crew we get to watch the show. It's a 2-hour show, starting at 8 AM. Michael Strahan, Rob Gronkowski, Howie Long, Terry Bradshaw, Jake Lazor, and Kurt Menifee would love to have as many veterans as they can just to have a chance to, in person, say “Thank you for all you do for us.”
