NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK
APRIL 19-25 2020
Volunteers--we sometimes forget them, but we can't do without them. They receive no salary, but we can never repay them!
4-H Leaders are found everywhere - at local club meetings, county councils, chaperoning at state events, fairs, contests....everywhere.
They are angels in aprons, saints in straw hats. Their only reward is the love of the kids and the respect of the community. But, when they look at the skills they've taught, and the youth they've help to build, there's an inner voice from somewhere that says, "Well done."
"Thank You" is shouted out to all our 4-H Leaders and Volunteers who are helping us, "Make the Best, Better!"
You are awesome and appreciated.

Meat Quality Assurance (MQA)
The Meat Quality Assurance training dates of April 7 and May 4th are cancelled. THE MQA training in 2020 will likely be done online. The training isn't yet finalized so look for SLV Extension emails and page for information. We have 75 youth who need to take the MQA this year, so we'll work to make it easy as possible.

NO 4-H MEETINGS UNTIL AT LEAST MAY 15
One major change because of the COVID-19 virus is that there can be NO Extension or 4-H meetings as a group or one-on-on exchanges until after May 15th. (Recent reports say this date may be extended.)

Horse & Dog IDs Due May 1
All horse and dog project members must submit IDs by May 1 for the animals they plan to show at the fair. Any animals who are not identified by that date may not be shown. Families enrolled in these projects received email reminders with detailed directions on how to complete this requirement. You complete the animal ID forms on 4HOnline - check the 4-H newsletter for more information and links. For dogs, you'll need to upload your dog's immunization record and pictures of your dog (front and side) to complete the form.

The San Luis Valley 4-H Newsletter was just emailed to all 4-H families, volunteers and friends. Get the most current information and links from there.

Clarification: Marvin needs to clarify some of what was said in the message from the San Luis Valley Fair Board earlier today. That message is included below the CSU comments.

First, by Colorado State University policy, there will be no group gatherings or face to face meetings, including Extension and 4-H, until at least May 15th. So, there cannot be a 4-H weigh-in on May 2nd.

Below are statements from Jean Glowacki-Beeman, State 4-H Director stating that all face to face 4-H activities (including weigh-ins) are suspended through May 15, 2020. This same message came from the President of CSU!

The suspension of face-to-face 4-H programming through May 15, 2020, includes all club and county meetings, project practices, workshops, contests, qualifiers and any other 4-H activity involving 4-H staff and volunteers. It includes 4-H Livestock project weigh in, retinal scanning and tag in activities. Please see Sam’s message sent 3/20/20 for more information.

I know this raises a lot of questions about how we move forward to prepare for future 4-H events. We will continue to work with you to find alternatives and answers to these questions.

Jean referenced information from Sam Lowry. I am including his information also.

Hello Agents,

Many questions have been asked recently about 4-H project livestock weigh in and retinal scanning events. As communicated on 3/19/20 per CSU and State 4-H edicts all face to face 4-H programs and activities of any kind have been suspended through May 15th. This includes 4-H Agent, member, volunteer & family involvement in 4-H Livestock project weigh in, retinal scanning & tag in events and activities. Agents are encouraged to communicate with their 4-H membership & County Fair Boards and seek potential non face to face alternatives such as extending nomination/entry deadlines or modifying ownership or identification requirements or virtual identification of project livestock. County 4-H Agents are reminded to abide by all National, CSU, Colorado 4-H and County Government Covid-19 restrictions and protocols that are in effect. Agents are also encouraged to use the animal ID feature in 4HOnline if possible as a modified opportunity to have members ID their animals.

Colorado State Fair has extended the nomination deadline for all livestock species. Nominations for all species are due to the CSF Livestock office no later than June 8, 2020. Please contact CSF Livestock Manager Robyn Toft [email protected] with CSF nomination questions.

It is well understood that these are not ideal circumstances for the identification of project livestock. The safety, health and wellbeing of all 4-H Agents, members, leaders, volunteers and families are priority during these trying times as we all face difficult adjustments to our day to day lives at this time. Please remember that information regarding these program restrictions changes rapidly and you may get further communication that has additional details about our current situation. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we learn more about how we will move forward together.

Regards,
Sam

Here is the message from the Fair Board.

Hello everyone,

The San Luis Valley Fair Board conducted an emergency meeting on March 27, 2020. They decided to reinstate the May 2nd weigh-in and tagging for goats, sheep and pigs that was cancelled due to COVID-19.
They are currently in a holding pattern due to COVID-19, but feel they can make a better decision about this event at their regularly scheduled meeting on April 13, 2020. Please know that they will do everything in their power to keep you and your family well during this crtitical time, They also want you to know that the 2020 fair will be held August 1-8 2020. If you have any questions please feel free to contact a fair board member.

There are other options for identifying animals. If you have questions you can call Marvin at 719-565-8158

Let’s be safe,
Marvin

San Luis Valley 4-H Families March 17, 2020

We want to provide you with an update on the impacts the Coronavirus (Covid19) is having on Colorado State University Extension and the 4-H programs.
First and foremost, remember to take all possible precautions to keep yourself and others safe and hopefully free from Covid19. High risk groups or individuals (age 60 or older) need to be especially careful.
If you have any questions, please get in touch with the Extension Office. 719-852-7381
The impacts of Covid19 are changing fast. This is the guidance we have received from Colorado State University and the State 4-H Office.
1.No meetings will be held of 10 or more people, until further notice. (This is currently a Federal rule)
a. This includes 4-H clubs, project meetings, community service programs, animal weigh-ins etc.
b. This will be re-evaluated periodically as things develop.
2. High risk groups need to be especially careful. If you are a 4-H leader in this group, please don’t hold 4-H meetings.
3. Some programs are suspended such as MQA trainings.
a. The State 4-H Office is working on an online program where those who need to take MQA will be able to take it online. We will let you know as soon as we hear from the State 4-H Office.
b. If you don’t have access to a computer where you can take MQA online, call the SLV Extension Office.
c. State 4-H events, such as State 4-H Conference in June, are still planned. If things change, we’ll let you know asap.
4. CSU is looking at the shooting sports and other program that have unique requirements to see if they can be modified for this year. Look for more information as it is developed.
5. CSU is working with us so we can hold meetings virtually through Zoom or Microsoft Teams. As we get this option working, we’ll let you know.
Thank you for your support and considerations,
Marvin Reynolds, SLV Area Extension Director
