Shortfin “Landen” has been on the move off of ! We tagged him last Monday and it is incredible to see the habitat use patterns of this incredible little shark! We look forward to continuing this work with in the coming years so we can learn more about these endangered predators.

The incredible . We focus quite a bit of our efforts studying this species since it is an Apex predator and has the ability to top-down regulate everything in its respective ecosystem. While we don’t encounter many adults or sub-adults in , we do encounter many white shark pups! These pups represent the future of our oceans so learning where they move, what dangers they may encounter and how often they use specific habitats is incredibly important. Sharks are an indication that you have a healthy ecosystem. While shark fishing and harvesting can be done in a sustainable manner, we hope that more and more people recognize the importance of these sharks and decide to let them go. Think for the long term. For example, think of what has happened to our shortfin mako sharks. A shark once considered relatively “abundant” in the pelagic realm is now ENDANGERED. This means with continued harvest at the present rate, they can go extinct in our lifetime! If you think it can’t happen, think again. It’s a real possibility. So do your part - let them go! And help keep our local marine ecosystem in check for many generations to come!
