Memorial Hall Fund Makes Donation to Monson
When Memorial Hall was closed for safety following the 2011 tornado, the Monson Arts Council created a Memorial Hall Fund to assist in the reopening of the hall. The purpose was not only to give financial assistance, but also to give townspeople an avenue to express the importance of Memorial Hall to them as individuals, and to the town. The main fundraiser was a silent auction to which many townspeople contributed auction items, and in which many others participated through their bids and purchases Well over $6000 was raised through the auction, and the fund has since grown to over $7300.
The arts council has been in communication with the town manager Evan Brassard to identify an appropriate gift which would be readily identifiable, and commensurate with the size of the fund. Contributions to either the sound system or the lights were considered, but the cost in each case was many times the amount of the fund. This winter, replacement curtains were identified as the most appropriate gift.
The curtains and valences in the auditorium had to be replaced with fire retardant ones. The proscenium curtains were also replaced, using town funds. The new curtains will match the proscenium curtain in fabric and color, and will have the added benefit of being a self contained light barrier, allowing the shades to be eliminated.
The curtain donation will leave about $1700 still in the fund. The MAC will continue to work to identify a further item for a second, smaller, gift.
