City of Monroe Fire Department Achieves Class One Fire Protection Classification

(Monroe, LA) - The City of Monroe Fire Department has once again achieved a Class One Public Fire Protection Classification following a recent evaluation by the Property Insurance Association of Louisiana (PIAL).

Monroe has maintained a Class One classification since 2002. Class One is the highest classification under PIAL’s 1 to 10 rating system and is associated with the lowest fire protection insurance premiums for residents.

The evaluation considers emergency communications, fire department operations, water supply, fire prevention, public fire education, community risk reduction and fire investigation.

PIAL also reviewed department records and inspected fire apparatus and equipment for compliance with established standards.

“A Class One rating is a reflection of the standards we hold ourselves to every day,” said Acting Fire Chief Kenneth Maxey. “It tells our community that we are prepared, equipped and ready to respond when they need us.”

Mayor Friday Ellis said the rating reflects the City’s continued investment in public safety and the work being done across departments to support fire protection.

“Achieving a Class One rating is a tremendous accomplishment for the Monroe Fire Department,” said Mayor Friday Ellis. “We are proud of the men and women who work every day to keep our community safe and provide this level of service to our residents.”

🕊️ In Loving Memory of Retiree Johnny Powell Sr.

The Monroe Fire Department is saddened to announce the passing of retired firefighter Johnny Powell Sr.

Johnny began his career in the fire service in 1983 and faithfully served until his retirement in 2010. Throughout his career, Johnny made a lasting impact on the Monroe Fire Department and the many firefighters and colleagues who had the privilege of working alongside him.

His dedication, service, and friendship will be remembered by current and former members of the department.

Please join us in keeping the Powell family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Monroe Firefighters Local 629 in collaboration with The Brand Shack presented a $1000 check to American Legion Post 13. The funds were raised from the sale of a specialized Monroe Fire t-shirt to commemorate America 250th Anniversary, which is being worn by personnel for the month of July. 🇺🇸 🚒

Last week in Monroe, Louisiana, Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) personnel and partner responders completed the Louisiana USAR Task Force Leader Course held June 15–17, 2026. This advanced training brought together experienced responders from fire service, emergency response, technical rescue, and partner agencies to strengthen leadership skills for managing complex and rapidly evolving incidents.

The course prepares responders to lead task forces during disasters, wildfires, technical rescues, and other emergencies, with a focus on Incident Action Plans, communication, accountability, responder safety, and tactical decision-making.

Three firefighters from Florida attended and provided strong praise and positive feedback on the quality and delivery of Louisiana’s program.

In addition to its operational value, the course delivered significant cost savings. With comparable training typically costing about $1,600 per student, providing instruction locally for 20 responders (17 Louisiana and 3 Florida) resulted in an estimated $32,000 in cost avoidance—while strengthening leadership capacity and overall Louisiana USAR readiness.

Special thanks to the Monroe Fire Department for hosting the training, Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office and LA Task Force #2 instructors, participating departments, and all partners who supported this training.

Congratulations to all participants for your commitment to leadership, readiness, and service to Louisiana communities.
