Months-Long Investigation Leads to Arrest in Overdose Death Case

Over the last several months, detectives have conducted an extensive investigation into a death caused by a narcotics overdose that occurred in Union County on December 29, 2025.

Throughout the investigation, detectives conducted numerous interviews and collected evidence, which was submitted to the Sheriff's Office Crime Lab for analysis. Based on the results, investigators obtained warrants for Ashley Parish, a resident of South Carolina.

After the warrants were issued, the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office located and arrested Parish. She was extradited to North Carolina and is currently being held at the Union County Detention Center without bond.

Chief Deputy Tony Underwood added:

"The devastating impact of illegal drugs reaches far beyond the individual user; it destroys families and tears apart communities. Our detectives and crime lab personnel worked tirelessly to ensure those responsible were brought to justice. If you are selling drugs in Union County, know that we are actively pursuing you, and we will hold you accountable for your actions."

Woman Accused of Using U-Haul in Attempted Murder

Detectives with the Union County Sheriff's Office recently concluded an investigation into a violent assault involving a male victim who sustained severe injuries after being struck by a U-Haul truck.

During the investigation, detectives developed evidence indicating that Brittney Carnevale allegedly struck the male with the truck trapping him underneath the vehicle.

The victim was transported to a local emergency department for treatment before being airlifted to another hospital, where he underwent extensive medical treatment due to the severity of his injuries.

Upon completion of the investigation, members of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Unit arrested Carnevale without incident. She was transported to the Union County Detention Center, where she was charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder and Larceny of a Motor Vehicle.

Carnevale appeared before a judicial official, who ordered that she be held without bond. She remains in custody at the Union County Detention Center.

Wanted Man Found Hiding in Lyft

Deputies responded to a report of a vehicle that crashed into a guardrail in front of the Bridge Restaurant in Hemby Bridge and then fled the scene. Witnesses were able to provide video footage of the damaged red Mazda, along with its license plate information.

Using this information, deputies identified the vehicle's owner as Christopher Newell, who had a suspended driver's license and multiple extraditable warrants out of South Carolina.

A search of the area led deputies to the abandoned vehicle, which had its license plate removed. While they searched the area on foot and with a drone, a Lyft driver leaving the area caught their attention, and a traffic stop was conducted.

While speaking with the driver, deputies observed a male hiding on the rear floorboard of the vehicle. Christopher Newell was arrested and transported to the Detention Center without incident.

He was issued a $100,000 secured bond and remains in custody.

A Record-Breaking Trap School Success

Last Saturday, we hosted Trap School at the Union County Sheriff's Office. This program is led by the dedicated team from Carolina Street Cats. This class teaches participants how to humanely trap free roaming outdoor cats so they can be spayed or neutered and returned to their environment.

This past weekend marked our largest class to date, and today we completed the spay and neuter portion of the program. We are proud to report that 38 cats were successfully trapped and sterilized.

We would like to thank Carolina Street Cats for their continued partnership and commitment to helping our Animal Shelter address the local feline population through humane, compassionate, and effective methods. Their efforts make a meaningful difference in our community, and we appreciate all they do.

Yesterday, three Union County Sheriff’s Office detention officers were sworn in as deputy sheriffs after graduating from the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Program at South Piedmont Community College.

The rigorous 872-hour program included classroom instruction, driving courses, fi****ms training, and scenario-based exercises, concluding with a state certification exam that all candidates successfully passed.

During a brief ceremony, Deputies Andrew Furguson, Michael Long, and Lydell White were celebrated by friends, family, and staff for their outstanding accomplishment. Captain Coppedge offered words of encouragement, expressing his pride in their achievement and urging them to continue learning and growing in their new roles. Each deputy began their career with the Sheriff’s Office as a detention officer at the Union County Detention Center before being selected for BLET.

Last night, during the BLET Graduation Ceremony, Deputy Andrew Furguson received special recognition for earning the highest score on the state certification exam. This prestigious award reflects his hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence throughout the program.

We are extremely proud of these men and are excited to see what the future holds for each of them as they continue their careers in law enforcement.

The Sheriff’s Office would also like to express its gratitude to South Piedmont Community College, as well as Mike Smith and John Rogers, who oversee the BLET program. Like any successful educational program, BLET relies on dedicated men and women who spend six months instructing, mentoring, and developing students into future law enforcement professionals. We sincerely thank them for their hard work, commitment, and dedication to the next generation of law enforcement professionals.

Please join us in congratulating our newest deputy sheriffs on this tremendous achievement and wishing them success as they begin the next chapter of their law enforcement careers.
