Naval Sea Cadet Corps - Wolverine Division

Naval Sea Cadet Corps - Wolverine Division USNSCC is a non-profit organization for youth ages 10-17 who have a desire to learn about the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine.

Who We Are:
Established by the Navy League of the United States in 1958 and federally incorporated by Congress in 1962, the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC) is a non-profit organization for youth ages 13-17 who have a desire to learn about the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. Sea Cadets are authorized by the Secretary of the Navy to wear Navy uniforms appropriately

marked with the Sea Cadet Corps insignia. The objectives of the Sea Cadet program are to introduce youth to naval life, to develop in them a sense of pride, patriotism, courage, and self-reliance, and to maintain an environment free of drugs and gangs. What We Do:
Wolverine Division cadets "drill" monthly on the campus of Monroe County Community College in Monroe, MI. When the opportunity presents itself, drill may take place at offsite locations such as the Naval Operations Support Center (NOSC) in Perrysburg, OH and the United States Coast Guard Station Toledo in Toledo, OH. Our unit is structured along military lines and led by Commanding Officer LCDR Lisa Stoyanovich, USNSCC. NSCC units are formed in many different ways including squadrons (reflective of Naval aviation) and battalions (reflective of Naval construction, i.e. “SeaBees”). Our unit is organized as a division which closely reflects the surface (land & sea) Navy. Whether a division, squadron, or battalion, local units have one main purpose: to foster team work, camaraderie and an understanding of the military command structure. Through classroom and applied instruction, cadets study subjects such as basic seamanship, military drill, leadership and American naval history. Wolverine Division participates in community events such as festivals, parades and fairs. We perform Color Guard and escort duties for special occasions such as public ceremonies, memorial services and sporting events. We perform community services such as American flag collection and disposal, organizing clothing/food drives and disaster response (cleanup, food/water distribution, etc). Training & Advancement:
Sea Cadet training consists of Navy Non-Resident Training Courses (NRTC), training evolutions (away from local units), shipboard training and training arranged locally by our unit command. New cadets enter the program at the rate of Seaman Recruit. In order for cadets to move up through the ranks they must complete the following: the NRTC Correspondence Course for that rate, one training evolution, and depending on the rate, the Navy's Military Leadership exam for that rate. NRTC courses cover basic military and naval subjects such as naval history, seamanship, leadership, and ship/aircraft familiarization. The cadet rate structure parallels that of the Navy and Coast Guard's enlisted rate structure, with Chief Petty Officer being the highest rate a cadet can achieve. Training evolutions are generally one to two weeks long and take place mostly during summer months and occasionally during winter and spring break periods. The first training evolution for all cadets is NSCC Recruit Training, better known as boot camp. During this condensed version of the Navy's official boot camp and led by active/reserve military personnel and Sea Cadet officers, cadets are instructed in military drill and discipline, physical fitness, seamanship, shipboard safety, first aid, naval history, and leadership. Membership Benefits:
Depending on the rate achieved in the Naval Sea Cadets, former cadets may be eligible to enlist in the armed forces at an advanced pay grade. Being a member honorably discharged from the Corps is looked upon favorably by selection boards for military academies and ROTC programs. Also those cadets who are accepted to a four-year university may be eligible for scholarships. The NSCC provides its cadets the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, build their character and become productive citizens. Membership Requirements:
In order to join the NSCC, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Must be between the ages of 13 and 17
- Must be a US Citizen
- Must be a full time student, maintaining satisfactory grades (2.00 "C" GPA)
- Must be free of felony convictions

USS CLEVELAND (LCS-31) COMMISSIONING EVENT: On Saturday May 16, 2026 Wolverine Division proudly attended and participated in the commissioning event for the US Navy’s newest, 16th, and final Freedom-variant Littoral Combat vessel, USS Cleveland (LCS-31) in Cleveland, Ohio. This event marked the fourth USN ship to carry the city’s name into history. From the US Fleet Forces Command website:

"Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) are fast, agile, mission-focused warships designed to operate in near-shore environments to counter 21st-century threats. It is a class of small surface combatants equipped to defeat challenges in the world’s littorals. LCS platforms can operate independently or in high-threat scenarios as part of a networked battle force that includes larger, multi-mission surface combatants such as cruisers and destroyers.
The commissioning of USS Cleveland underscores the Navy's commitment to building America’s Fleet of the Future. For 250 years, American naval power has projected strength globally. That mission continues – and intensifies. We operate forward 24/7, 365 days a year. This operational tempo demands continuous capability delivery, and the Fleet of the Future is our answer."
