Jewish immigrants were central founders and leaders of the American labor movement at the turn of the 20th century. We salute the ongoing progress of labor activists and celebrate their achievements! Happy Labor Day!

This morning, NCJW deeply mourns the loss of Gloria Steinem, a trailblazing feminist, journalist, and activist whose work transformed the fight for gender equality in America and around the world.

Gloria was arguably the most iconic Jewish feminist of all time. For more than half a century, Gloria helped move feminism into the mainstream and build a movement for women to have power over our bodies, our lives, and our futures. Her leadership tore down barriers, opened doors, and inspired generations to keep pushing forward.

Gloria’s connection to NCJW was deeply personal. Her grandmother, Pauline Perlmutter Steinem — a suffragist and pioneering Jewish communal leader — served as president of NCJW’s Toledo Section. Decades later, Gloria carried that legacy forward, championing issues NCJW cares deeply about, including reproductive freedom and women’s equality.

Gloria Steinem’s legacy cannot be undersold, even as we recognize that the movement she helped build was imperfect and too often failed to fully include all women. She carried on her shoulders a movement that generations since have challenged, expanded, and strengthened. This is the movement we are proud to continue building today.

May her memory be for a blessing, and a revolution.

When New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin walks the runway at the Metropolitan Opera House next week, she will be dressed by Israeli American designer Elie Tahari. The pairing is driven by their shared history of entrepreneurship and building success from the ground up, but amid heightened antisemitism, the moment also spotlights two proud Jewish and Zionist New Yorkers.

Now in its third year, Style Across the Aisle — set to coincide with New York Fashion Week — pairs 30 bipartisan elected officials with New York City designers based on shared geography, heritage or life experience.

This year’s lineup arrives against a backdrop of rising antisemitic attacks in New York City, which some Jewish leaders say has been fueled by Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s rhetoric targeting Israel. It includes several openly Jewish, pro-Israel lawmakers — among them Menin and City Comptroller Mark Levine — walking in pieces by Jewish designers Tahari and Yosel Tiefenbrun, a Chabad rabbi-turned-tailor whose Tribeca studio sits blocks from Levine’s office.

Style Across the Aisle founder Skye Ostreicher, a New York political personality, told Jewish Insider the event’s goal is to build bridges and remove labels — designer labels as well as political and religious ones — that make it easy to reduce people to caricatures. “Very often, when we label someone ‘Jew’ or ‘Zionist,’ it’s easy to hate them versus if you see them as a human first,” she said.

Ostreicher, who identifies as “a proud Jewish woman,” said she worked to include participants of every background. Yusef Salaam, a Muslim member of the New York City Council once wrongly imprisoned as one of the Central Park Five, will walk this year’s runway in a suit designed by a fellow Harlem native who also served time behind bars.
