To all of those of you that have followed us for many years, Doug and I are taking a break this year and will not be licensed to rehabilitate fawns… unfortunately it has also become two costs prohibitive for many others to continue. There are very few rehabilitators left in the state of North Carolina and only four or five that are within an hour of Charlotte or Union County.

that belongs to Tara Collins, Tara has been a rehabilitator for almost 40 years. I’m asking that you go to her page and click the donate button and help her. She has several fawns at this time and it would be great for her to have some financial assistance!
Before we do not have any rehabilitator left please help me support those that we do have!

Just a reminder this year we are taking a break and we are not licensed to receive funds! You are welcome to send us a message to ask for help and we will advise you to the best of our ability. Unfortunately there are no rehabbers anymore in Union County or Mecklenburg County for Baby deer 😢 so you will need to travel. Please make sure that you talk to one of the licensed rehabilitation folks BEFORE!!!  You move the baby or touch it and definitely don’t feed it! 

Deer fawns are born in late spring and early summer. Newborns have spots and almost no scent, which is nature’s built‑in invisibility cloak. A doe will leave their fawns alone for long stretches on purpose.

It’s strategy, not neglect.

If you find a fawn lying quietly by itself, don’t pick it up, don’t move it, and don’t try to be a hero. Mom expects to find it exactly where she left it, and she’s usually closer than you think.

A fawn may need help if it’s bleating loudly, looks thin or injured, or has visible diarrhea. In those cases, call a licensed fawn rehabilitator or the NC Wildlife Helpline at 866‑318‑2401 before taking action.

Welcome to Wellness Wednesday: Do the Thing
For 2026 I will do a wellness video every Wednesday. For those who don’t know me I’m Lisa Gerdon-Dilworth and my husband Doug and I own The Salty Horse Ranch where we breed and training and do rehab. Doug is a practicing veterinarian almost 35 years and together we run the business and homeschool our two daughters.

Daisy came to us after a couple of days of them trying to find a rehabilitator. Daisy was found in somebody’s backyard and was paralyzed oddly she has maintained a suckle reflex and will drink. Over the last 24 hours she has gained partial use of her legs and her tail! She still cannot stand on her own but our daughter Charley has been incredibly dedicated to doing her rehab and giving her massages and helping her to move all of her legs! So please send all of your prayers for Miss Daisy!
