Yesterday, the House passed two very important pieces of legislation relating to AI consumer protections. The advancement of Artificial Intelligence is moving fast, and our laws haven't kept up. The House has been working on this issue for a long time, beginning with a joint House and Senate AI Study Committee that began studying it 3 years ago. SB 540 will put guardrails around chatbots that communicate with minors, requiring them to disclose every hour or so that they are chatbots, among other items. SB 594 will establish a criminal offense for digital identity fraud, it addresses Election Deepfakes, and creates a felony penalty for the production and distribution of AI-generated sexually explicit materials depicting a child.
