The Monroe Public Safety Department (MPSD) had a great time at the Juneteenth event at Hellenberg Park in Monroe, Michigan.

It was our privilege and honor to celebrate this important day with our community. We enjoyed seeing so many families, friends, and neighbors come together for the event.

Many of the children had a great time getting free rides on our golf cart while our officers worked the event, and we were glad to be part of such a positive community celebration.

Please enjoy some of the photos we captured from the day.

The City of Monroe Public Safety would like to recognize Juneteenth, also known as "Freedom Day". This is the oldest national celebration of the ending of the slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth commemorates the day, June 19th of 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Texas were finally told of the end of slavery even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1862 and made effective in 1863.

City of Monroe offices (including the Monroe Public Safety Department Records Bureau) will be closed as we honor this national holiday.

On Sunday, June 14, 2026 at approximately 10:08 a.m., the Monroe Public Safety Department was dispatched to Archer's Book Lounge, located at 39 South Monroe Street, on a report of a structure fire.

The building, which is currently undergoing interior renovations, was unoccupied at the time of the incident. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered smoke throughout the structure and observed flames showing from the rear of the building on the first floor. Firefighters entered the building and quickly extinguished the fire, preventing further damage. No injuries were reported, and no surrounding residents or businesses were displaced as a result of the incident.

The Frenchtown Township Fire Department and Monroe Township Fire Department also assisted on scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but preliminary findings suggest this incident was accidental. We would like to thank Frenchtown Township Fire Department and Monroe Charter Township Fire Department for their assistance on scene. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Monroe Fire Marshal Hudson at (734) 243-7519 or Monroe County Central Dispatch at (734) 243-7070.

The Monroe Public Safety Department is proud to partner with the Monroe County Intermediate School District on a student work-based learning program.

Through this partnership, MCISD students Thomas and Dakotah have joined us on a regular basis, helping keep our police and fire stations clean, organized, and ready for daily operations. Their work supports both police and fire, and they have quickly become part of the MPSD team.

This program gives students a chance to be involved in public safety, see how police and fire operations work, and be part of something bigger than themselves. More importantly, it is another great example of what can happen when community partners work together to create meaningful opportunities.

A special thank you to MCISD Superintendent Stephen McNew and his staff for making this possible. We also want to recognize job coach Owen for his support and guidance, and our Records Supervisor, Tina D***s, for all of her work in helping bring this program together.

Thank you, Thomas, Dakotah, and MCISD. We are proud to have you as part of the MPSD team. Monroe County Intermediate School District - Official

Monroe Police Arrest Man On Animal Cruelty Charges After Deceased Dog Found in Vehicle

On June 10, 2026, at approximately 11:00 p.m., Monroe Police Officers responded to the 800 block of Smith Street for an animal welfare complaint. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased dog inside a parked vehicle.

The investigation determined the dog had been left unattended inside a locked vehicle for an extended period of time and died as a result. Officers identified the dog's owner as a 34-year-old Monroe man who knowingly left the animal inside the vehicle. Monroe Police worked in conjunction with Monroe County Animal Control and submitted the case to the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office for review.

The offender was arrested on June 11, 2026, on an authorized warrant for Animal Killing/Torturing – 3rd Degree. The offender is currently lodged at the Monroe County Jail, pending arraignment in the First District Court.

As temperatures rise, the Monroe Public Safety Department reminds everyone that vehicles can become dangerously hot within minutes, even when the outside temperature feels moderate. Children and pets should never be left unattended inside a vehicle. Cracking windows or parking in the shade does little to prevent interior temperatures from reaching life-threatening levels.

Michigan law protects both children and animals from being left in dangerous conditions. Under MCL 750.135a, a caregiver may face criminal penalties for leaving a child unattended in a vehicle under circumstances that create an unreasonable risk of harm or injury. Under MCL 750.50, pet owners are required to provide adequate care and may face criminal charges for placing an animal in conditions that endanger its health or welfare.

Before leaving your vehicle, remember:
• Always take children and pets with you.
• Check the back seat before locking your vehicle.
• Ensure pets have access to proper shelter, food, and fresh water.
• If you see a child or animal in distress inside a vehicle, call 911 immediately.

Summer should be a time to enjoy the outdoors safely. A few moments of awareness can prevent a tragedy. For more information regarding Michigan law:

Monroe Police officers have been conducting extra patrols to enforce park rules throughout the City of Monroe, including at Labor Park and the Arthur Lesow Community Center grounds.

Last night, after clearing everyone from the park, officers went the extra mile to clean up litter throughout the property, filling four large trash bags with trash that was later disposed of by the Department of Public Services.

As a reminder, all City parks and the exterior areas of the Arthur Lesow Community Center close at 10 PM. Recently, several issues in the area, including alcohol use, smoking in the parks, and littering, have been addressed. These violations are prohibited and will be enforced.

We encourage everyone to enjoy our parks, respect the rules, clean up after themselves, and help keep these community spaces looking their best.

Thank you to our midnight shift officers for going above and beyond for Monroe.

Remember, if you see a violation or have a concern, please get in touch with the Monroe Public Safety Department. Central Dispatch at 734.243.7070, or use the MyMonroeApp, which can be found on the City of Monroe homepage, a new real-time mobile civic app that allows citizens to identify and report non-emergency civic issues.

June is National Safety Month, and this weekend served as an important reminder of why safe driving matters.

During the early morning hours on June 6, Monroe Public Safety responded to a serious two-vehicle crash involving a 17-year-old driver and multiple passengers. The driver reported falling asleep at the wheel, resulting in a collision that caused significant damage to both vehicles. Several occupants suffered injuries, including one passenger who was transported to the hospital and later released. Fortunately, everyone involved is expected to recover.

Crashes like this are a reminder that fatigue can be just as dangerous as distracted or impaired driving. If you're tired, don't get behind the wheel. Make sure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seatbelt, obey traffic laws, and avoid overcrowding vehicles. As summer begins and more young drivers are on the road, parents are encouraged to talk with their teens about safe driving habits and the importance of making responsible decisions.

One moment of inattention can change lives forever. Drive alert. Drive rested. Drive safely.

Monroe Fire is training on search and rescue this month.

Search and rescue is one of the most important responsibilities firefighters perform, as it focuses on locating and removing occupants who may be trapped, injured, or overcome by smoke during an emergency. Through realistic training scenarios, firefighters develop the skills needed to operate safely in low-visibility, high-stress environments while making rapid decisions when every second counts. Continuous training helps ensure our firefighters are prepared to respond effectively when lives are on the line.

You can help improve your family's safety by installing and regularly testing smoke alarms, creating and practicing a home fire escape plan, keeping exits clear of obstacles, and teaching children how to call 911 in an emergency. These simple steps can make a significant difference during a fire. The Monroe Public Safety Department remains committed to ongoing training, preparedness, and protecting our community through professional emergency response and fire prevention efforts.
