Thinking about restoring a historic property? Learn how state and federal historic preservation tax credits can help offset rehabilitation costs.

The City of Monroe Planning and Development Department is hosting Brett Sturm, Restoration Services Branch Supervisor with the State Historic Preservation Office, for a presentation on tax credit opportunities available for historic commercial buildings and owner-occupied historic homes. The presentation takes place on Thursday, June 4, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Old Armory Community Center.

The presentation is open to everyone, but property owners with buildings that contribute to a National Register Historic District may find it especially valuable.

Whether it’s a quick ride across town, a walk through your neighborhood, or future greenway connections, Monroe is working toward a more connected community for pedestrians and bicyclists alike 🚲🚶

The Forward Monroe: Land Use and Transportation Plan identifies walking and biking as key parts of the City’s long-term goals for transportation, recreation, and connectivity. From improving sidewalks and trails to adding bicycle-friendly features and safer roadway connections, these efforts are focused on making it easier to move around Monroe in more ways than one.

Bike Month helps support that vision by encouraging safety awareness, community input, and conversations about future improvements that could help shape Monroe’s next steps for walking and bicycling infrastructure. Your input through the Bike Month Interest Survey is valuable in interpreting what transportation infrastructure will fit best within our community.

As Monroe continues planning for the future, these small steps today can help build a safer, more connected community tomorrow.

Big ideas are taking shape for Downtown Monroe 🏙️

So far, more than 150 community members joined us for the first Downtown Master Plan public input workshop, helping share ideas and priorities for the future of Downtown. We’ve also completed a market analysis to better understand where people are spending money and what opportunities exist to bring more activity and investment into Downtown Monroe.

The master plan team has reviewed seven potential opportunity sites and is recommending five for a deeper dive as the plan continues to develop.

Next up: planning for our second public workshop coming later this summer.
