Twenty-five years later, September 11 is no longer a memory for an entire generation; it is history.

And history has a way of becoming softened with time.

September 11 should never be reduced to a date, a slogan, or a brief lesson. Nearly 3,000 people were murdered that day, including members of our own Monroe Township community. First responders ran into unimaginable danger, families were shattered, and thousands of Americans answered the call to serve in the military in the years that followed.

We owe it to all of them to remember September 11 as it truly was and not a sanitized version of it.

Some memories fade with time. Our responsibility should not.

UPDATE: Driver Identified and Charged Following September 6th Hit-and-Run Motorcycle Crash

The Monroe Township Police Department is providing an update regarding the serious hit-and-run motorcycle crash that occurred on Sunday, September 6th, 2026, at approximately 4:35 p.m. on Union Valley Half Acre Road near North Pondview Boulevard.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 8th, 2026, following an extensive investigation by members of the Monroe Township Police Department Detective Bureau and Traffic Safety Division, investigators located the vehicle believed to have been involved in the crash and subsequently left the scene.

The vehicle was identified as a white 2020 Honda CR-V. The driver was identified as Maryann Helge, 85, of Monroe Township.

As a result of the investigation, Helge was charged with the following offenses:

1. Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury (N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.1)
2. Endangering an Injured Victim (N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.2(a))
3. Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting in Personal Injury (N.J.S.A. 39:4-129)
4. Failure to Report a Motor Vehicle Accident (N.J.S.A. 39:4-130)

The charges and allegations contained in this matter are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Monroe Township Police Department would like to thank the members of the public who provided information and assistance during this investigation. We also recognize the efforts of the Monroe Township Police Department Detective Bureau and Traffic Safety Division investigators whose work led to the identification of the involved vehicle and driver.

The 75-year-old male Monroe Township resident who was operating the motorcycle remains hospitalized at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick and is currently listed in stable condition.

The motor vehicle crash remains under investigation by Officer Marc Tyson of the Monroe Township Police Department Traffic Safety Division. Anyone with additional information pertaining to this crash is asked to contact Officer Tyson at 732-521-0222, extension 254.

Monroe Township Police Seek Witnesses Following Serious Hit-and-Run Motorcycle Crash

The Monroe Township Police Department Traffic Safety Division is investigating a serious hit-and-run crash involving a motorcycle that occurred at approximately 4:35 p.m. on Sunday, September 6th, 2026.

Monroe Township Police officers responded to Union Valley Half Acre Road near the intersection of North Pondview Boulevard following a report of a motorcyclist down in the roadway. Upon arrival, officers located a Honda motorcycle in the southbound lane of Union Valley Half Acre Road. The motorcyclist, a 75-year-old Monroe Township resident, sustained a serious head injury and was transported by Monroe Township EMS, with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital paramedics on board, to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the motorcycle was traveling northbound on Union Valley Half Acre Road as it approached North Pondview Boulevard. At the same time, a vehicle, described as possibly a white SUV, was traveling southbound on Union Valley Half Acre Road. The vehicle made a left turn onto North Pondview Boulevard in front of the motorcycle, resulting in a collision. Following the crash, the vehicle left the scene.

The Monroe Township Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash, observed the events immediately before or after it, or was traveling in the area of Union Valley Half Acre Road and North Pondview Boulevard at approximately 4:35 p.m. to contact investigators. Police are also seeking information from anyone who may recognize the vehicle involved, know the identity of the driver, or have relevant surveillance, dash-camera, or other video footage from the area.

The Monroe Township Police Department Traffic Safety Division is investigating a serious motor vehicle crash
that occurred during the early morning hours of Sunday, August 30, 2026.

At approximately 4:28 a.m., officers responded to Route 33 in the area between Applegarth Road and Perrineville Road for a report of a single-vehicle crash. The preliminary investigation determined that the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Route 33 before leaving the roadway and ultimately striking a utility pole on the westbound side of the highway.

The driver, a female resident of Trenton, New Jersey, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported
to an area hospital for treatment.

Investigators believe that additional motorists were traveling on Route 33 at the time of the crash and may have witnessed the incident or circumstances immediately preceding it.

The Monroe Township Police Department Traffic Safety Division is asking anyone who witnessed the crash,
was traveling on Route 33 in the area of Applegarth Road and Perrineville Road at approximately 4:28 a.m. or may have information relevant to the investigation to contact Officer Taylor Deickmann at 732-521-0222, extension 248.

The crash remains under investigation by the Monroe Township Police Department Traffic Safety Division.

Officers Safely Intervene During Mental Health Crisis at Valor Pointe

MONROE TOWNSHIP, NJ — On August 7, 2026, the Monroe Township Police Department responded to Valor Pointe Apartments after a resident contacted the department requesting assistance while experiencing a mental health crisis. A portion of the Valor Pointe community is dedicated to providing housing for veterans.

Upon arrival, officers were met at the door by an individual armed with a kitchen knife. The individual began using the knife to harm himself, creating an immediate danger of serious injury.

Officers Kevin Ging, Daniel Lang, and Kamrin O’Neill quickly intervened and were able to safely disarm and restrain the individual, preventing him from causing further harm to himself. The incident was brought under control without injury to the responding officers.

Monroe Township EMS subsequently transported the individual to a local medical facility for further evaluation and treatment.

“Our officers were faced with a difficult and rapidly evolving situation and responded with professionalism, restraint, and compassion,” said Chief Griffin Banos. “Their actions helped ensure this individual could receive the care he needed.”

The Monroe Township Police Department reminds residents that help is available for those experiencing a mental health crisis. New Jersey residents can call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, which provides free, confidential support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Veterans and service members can call 988 and press 1 to connect with the Veterans Crisis Line. Anyone facing an immediate threat to life or safety should call 911.
