82 years ago on June 6th, the D-Day invasion took place.

Codenamed Operation Overlord, it was the largest land, sea, and air invasion ever attempted. The coordinated attack across five beaches on the coast of Normandy marked the beginning of the liberation of France and the rest of Western Europe.

Today, we ask that you take a moment of remembrance for those who risked their lives to ensure victory.

We honor the bravery, sacrifice, and brotherhood of D-Day veterans. They are, and forever will be, a part of one of the greatest generations to have ever lived.

Yesterday 3/13 and into 3/14 during the wind storm that rolled through the area, 154 crews handled and assisted with multiple calls in the township and surrounding mutual aid areas. Some calls included two brush fires, two possible structure fires, and multiple wires and trees down.

With the amount of calls that were handled by all emergency crews in and around the area, the power companies are inundated with calls of their own. Please be patient with the power companies as they work to restore power to their service areas. Remember if you see a power line down, treat it as if it were live and avoid getting near it and report it.

Seen below is one of the brush fires in the City of Monongahela that 154 crews responded to throughout the storm.

Over the past two days, 154 Squad and SOV spent roughly 8 hours each day assisting in Monongahela with a search and rescue on the Monongahela River. While on the search detail, crews handled a water condition in a residence on Saturday and a possible residential structure fire on Sunday.

We also want to thank The Rib Cage for their generous donation of food for our members who were out all day assisting with the search, we greatly appreciate everything you do for us.

As Winter Storm Fern approaches, please remember the tips discussed in yesterday’s post. We will list them again below:

We are encouraging everyone to gather emergency supplies, check your Smoke/CO detectors, keeping a shovel and salt at the ready (but take breaks if going out to shovel as this is a physically exhausting task), fueling vehicles and generators, putting faucets on a slow drip, and planning for potential power outages. If you are planning to heat your home with an alternative form than normal, ensure that you exercise caution when doing so.

Keep a check on loved ones, pets, and your neighbors. Look for warming shelters ahead of time just incase the power outages do happen.

Along with these tips, if you have a fire hydrant on or near your property, please consider shoveling them out in case a fire happens we have to use that hydrant. If everyone that is able to does this, fire departments should be able to access the fire hydrants easier which in turn means faster water to extinguish the fire.

Be safe during this winter storm!

ATTENTION:
As you have probably seen or heard on the news the entire last week, we have a snow storm coming this weekend that will affect our area. The National Weather Service of Pittsburgh has issued a Winter Storm Warning starting Saturday 7PM until Monday at 12PM. Actual forecasted amounted are still changing as this is a complicated storm but most reports are pointing to 10”+ making this the largest storm we have seen in years. Along with the snow will also come brutal low temperatures and wind chills in the single digits and negatives. Please avoid unnecessary travel!
