I could not be prouder or more grateful to MOPD. They are simply the best, led by Chief Brian Chaney.

During National Police Week, the Monona Police Department would like to thank the Monona community for your continued trust, partnership, and support.

National Police Week also serves as a solemn reminder to honor and remember the law enforcement officers in Dane County and across our nation who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

We are proud to serve this community and remain grateful for the strong partnerships that help make Monona a safe place to live, work, and visit.

Service. Leadership. Teamwork.

I’m sure many in Monona know about the horrific accident that happened yesterday at the intersection of Monona Drive and Broadway.

Please see the update below on the incident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims and their families, especially those who are in serious condition.

Please join me in extending gratitude to MOPD and MOFD/EMS on their extraordinary work on this tragedy as well. They were there very quickly and operated with utmost care and professionalism throughout about 5 hours - not only caring for victims and families and getting them to the hospital but cleaning up two blocks of vehicles and debris. As I like to say, Monona proud.

**CASE UPDATE**
MONONA POLICE DEPARTMENT
NEWS RELEASE UPDATE: Serious Crash Investigation
CASE NUMBER: MO26-03461
DATE: March 25, 2026

The Monona Police Department is providing the following update regarding the serious multi-vehicle crash that occurred on March 24, 2026, at the intersection of E. Broadway and Monona Drive.
The ongoing investigation has determined that a total of seven (7) vehicles were involved in the crash. Six (6) of the drivers, all of whom are adults, sustained injuries.

At this time:
- One adult male remains in critical condition
- An adult female with serious injuries is now in stable condition
- The remaining injured individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries

Preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of a full-sized pickup truck traveling eastbound on Broadway experienced an acute medical emergency, causing the driver to become unconscious. The vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed as it approached the intersection at Monona Drive, where multiple vehicles were stopped at a red light. The full-sized pickup truck subsequently struck several stopped vehicles.

The driver of the full-sized pickup, an adult male, is fully cooperating with the investigation and did not sustain serious injuries as a result of the crash.

The Monona Police Department continues to actively investigate this incident. Several witnesses have been contacted, and detectives are reviewing additional CCTV footage from nearby businesses as well as information from Monona’s Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR)/Flock system to further corroborate vehicle location, timing, and events leading up to the crash.

The crash scene was processed with the assistance of the Wisconsin State Patrol. MOPD officers and investigators collected available evidence, including toxicology samples, as part of our comprehensive investigation.

This information is preliminary and should not be considered a final conclusion. MOPD is committed to fully investigating this incident.

Additional information will be released when appropriate.

We continue to ask the community to keep the critically injured young man, his family, and all those impacted by this incident in their thoughts.

Happy Friday all -

In the interest of providing both clarity and transparency, I'm writing to update everyone on the "armored vehicle" that was discussed at the last City Council meeting and written about in this weeks Leader Independent. I apologize for not writing sooner. As some know, I had some significant surgery within the past month and my time has not been my own.

First and foremost, the vehicle discussed was offered via auction by Madison. The final bid amount placed on this vehicle exceeded the City Council’s approved maximum, and as such the City is NOT acquiring this vehicle.

Funds to be utilized to pay for the acquisition and operation of this vehicle were to be forfeiture funds, and would not have required any debt service, would not have any impact on the tax levy, and would not have impacted the City’s budget. Staff anticipated that the insurance cost would be the same as any other police vehicle, and would be directly related to the value of the vehicle.

The vehicle would have been kept in one of the Fire Department bays.

This item was placed on a public agenda and several residents provided comment on this item. Because the item involved a competitive price bid, Council took action in closed session.

Both the Chief and the Mayor and Council were very clear that the intent of this vehicle would be for emergency rescue operations only. This is to say we saw its value only as a defensive or protection tool for our officers and community. Had we acquired the vehicle, the Chief was prepared to submit a formal policy regarding the use of the vehicle to Council for their consideration, with an emphasis on safely moving officers, victims or citizens out of harm’s way when dealing with armed suspects. This would mean that the vehicle would not be frequently utilized and would require minimal maintenance costs. There was no/ZERO intent of creating or deploying a SWAT team for the City. Additional conversations regarding the appearance of the vehicle included using more of a safety yellow with “RESCUE” on the side, but nothing had been formally determined. The Chief and the Mayor and Council definitely took the appearance and perception of this vehicle in the community into consideration, especially with what is going on right now with federal law enforcement activities, and they were prepared to ensure proper oversight of vehicle and its use in the Community.

Our police department will continue to seek out alternatives to this vehicle to provide safe and effective defensive equipment for our officers and residents. We take our responsibilities for the safety of both seriously!
