Keep an eye out for this big bird—a Red-tailed Hawk has been seen hanging around Horns Hill (Trails 3, 5, or 6) the past few weeks! Because Red-tails prefer to soar on thermals of hot air rising from land (and not open ocean), they’re an island rarity. We can tell this is an immature bird by its light eye color and lack of red tail. Monhegan certainly has the rodent population to support a big hawk, so maybe it will stick around!

Keep an eye out for Ghost Pipes (Monotropa uniflora) along the trails in Cathedral Woods! They’re ghostly white because they don’t contain chlorophyll, the green substance essential to photosynthesis. So instead of using sunlight to make food, these unusual plants tap into underground fungal networks in the forest.

In belated honor of World Snake Day, which was July 16, here are three of the four snake species that can be found on Monhegan: Garter Snake, Smooth Green Snake, and Red-bellied Snake. (Ring-necked Snakes can also be found here.) As you explore the island, watch for (but don’t harass) these lovely creatures catching rays on roads, trails, and rocks
