City of Monessen Police Department The Official page of the Monessen Police Department The City’s first police Chief was D.W. Cooper, and he was assisted by James Laird and Ewing L.

The City of Monessen Police Department was formed in 1897, in order to protect the residents of the newly formed settlement, which would become the Borough of Monessen in 1898, and the City of Monessen in 1921. Woolsey. Monessen’s first Police Officers patrolled on foot and by horse. Today, we have modern patrol cars, two of which are environmentally friendly, hybrid models. The first Monessen Pol

ice Station was located at 4th and Donner Avenue, in the City’s first Borough Building. Before the construction of the Borough Building in the early 1900s, City offices were held at the Louttit Building at 8th and Donner Ave. The Police Department moved to the Monessen City Hall at 3rd and Donner in 1927 and was headquartered there until 2012, when it moved to its present location at the new Monessen Public Safety Building, across the street. Our police department has been protecting residents for nearly 125 years. The Police Department is controlled and managed by its Chief Executive Officer, Chief David Yuhasz. Legislative purview falls under the Mayor, and the Chief and Police Department is a part of the Department of Public Affairs. The Monessen Police Department is responsible for answered calls related to domestic issues, abuse, drugs, violence, and everything in between. The Monessen Police are also dedicated to giving back to their community, engaging with residents, and performing community service projects. They can often be found engaging with residents of all ages, getting to know them, and explaining what their job entails.

The Monessen Police Department would like to remind the community that as warmer weather arrives and residents spend more time outdoors, city ordinances related to dogs will be enforced. These ordinances are in place to help ensure the safety and enjoyment of all residents, dog owners, and their pets while using city-owned property and public spaces.
Please be aware of the following requirements:

-All dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than six (6) feet while on public property or property owned by the City.

- Dog owners are required to immediately clean up any dog waste on streets, alleys, or public grounds within the City.

- The owner, keeper, or harborer of any dog is responsible for any damage or injury the dog causes to another person’s real or personal property.

The City of Monessen and the Monessen Police Department encourage everyone—including dogs and their owners—to responsibly enjoy our parks and public spaces so they remain safe, clean, and welcoming for all.

Monessen Police Department Community Reminder
Keep Your Vehicle Doors Locked – Day & Night
The Monessen Police Department is reminding all City of Monessen residents to help reduce theft and keep our neighborhoods safe by locking your vehicle doors every time you park—whether it’s during the day or overnight.
Most vehicle break‑ins are crimes of opportunity. A locked door is one of the strongest and simplest deterrents.
Please remember to:

✔ Lock all doors and close all windows
✔ Remove keys and key fobs from the vehicle
✔ Keep valuables out of sight
✔ Report suspicious activity immediately to MPD

Your awareness and cooperation make a difference.
Together, we can keep Monessen safe.

The City of Washington Police Department mourns the tragic loss of Pennsylvania State Police Corporal Timothy O’Connor, who was killed in the line of duty on March 8, 2026.

Corporal O’Connor made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

What began as a routine traffic stop ended in an unimaginable tragedy, reminding us all of the dangers law enforcement officers face every single day while protecting their communities.

Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with Corporal O’Connor’s family, friends, and his brothers and sisters of the Pennsylvania State Police during this incredibly difficult time. We ask our community to join us in keeping his loved ones and the entire law enforcement family in your prayers.

Please take a moment today to remember Corporal Timothy O’Connor and honor his service, his sacrifice, and his commitment to protecting others.
