September is an important month of reflection, awareness, and support as we recognize both 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡.

At the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office, we have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact that substance use, mental health struggles, and su***de can have on individuals, families, and our community. We also recognize the importance of prevention, early intervention, connection, and removing the stigma that can keep people from asking for help.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡, 𝐰𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨:
💚 Check in with someone who may be struggling.
💚 Listen without judgment and let others know they are not alone.
💚 Talk openly about mental health, substance use, and su***de.
💚 Encourage those who need help to reach out for support.
💚 Remember that recovery is possible and hope can be found.

We were grateful for the opportunity to participate in WakeUp Carolina's Light the Way for Hope event last night. It was a meaningful evening of remembrance, connection, and hope.

We are thankful for the opportunity to connect with families who have been impacted by overdose and to come together to honor and remember the lives lost. Each life represented is more than a statistic — they were loved, they mattered, and they are missed.

Thank you to Wake Up Carolina for bringing our community together and continuing to shine a light on the importance of compassion, prevention, recovery, and hope. 💜🕯️

The Orangeburg County Coroner's Office needs your help in locating next of kin for Mr. Mark Smith.

Mr. Smith died on July 21, 2026 in Bowman, SC. According to sources, Mr. Smith is known for moving from place to place. He may have previously lived in Church Road or Emporia, Virginia area.

Our office is honored to host the 3rd annual Berkeley Remembers, an event dedicated to honoring the lives lost to violence and recognizing the families, friends, and loved ones whose lives have been forever changed.

Every life lost represents a story, a family, and a community that continues to carry their memory. This event provides an opportunity to pause, remember, and stand together in support of those who have been affected by violence.

We remember those we have lost.
We honor those who continue to grieve.
And we stand together as a community committed to compassion, healing, and preventing future loss.

💜 Their lives mattered. Their stories matter. They will not be forgotten.

🌟 Allison, our Community Outreach Coordinator, had a great time representing the Berkeley County Coroner's Office at the Goose Creek Police Department's Annual National Night Out yesterday!

💙 Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table to learn more about the resources and services we provide. We appreciate the opportunity to connect with our community and partner with local agencies to promote education, safety, and prevention. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

Check out this month’s FREE Grief Support Meeting led by Certified Grief Coach Christal Heyward, with special guest Dr. Thaddeus John Bell, Family Physician. This gathering provides a safe, compassionate space to connect, learn, and find encouragement with others who understand.
