This week, Lieutenant Gruber had the distinct pleasure of recognizing two outstanding employees as our EMT and Paramedic of the Quarter!

Please join Lieutenant Gruber and the rest of the BCEMS team in congratulating EMT Ratajczak, who was peer nominated and selected as EMT of the Quarter, and Paramedic Berlet-Pittman, who was peer-nominated and selected as Paramedic of the Quarter.

Both are great examples of professionalism, dedication to the EMS profession, and commitment to serving the citizens of Berkeley County. Congratulations, and thank you both for representing BCEMS so well!

We are proud to announce that our county council has approved our long awaited request for additional staffing to help improve the work/life balance of our crews. In October 2026, we are hiring additional Paramedics and EMTs to make a transition for several of our ambulance crews to transition from a 24/48 schedule to a 24/72 schedule to include acquisition of 24 new positions. Our EMT Academy started this week as part of this transition and are hoping for 12 graduates of this program to join our ranks as well as finding a few more providers to fill those gaps. Anticipating moving to the 24/72 schedule within the first quarter of 2027. Come join our team using the link below!

Congratulations to all of Berkeley County's retirees! We celebrate an incredible group of public servants whose dedication, professionalism, and commitment have strengthened our county and positively impacted the lives of countless citizens. Thank you to each of you for your years of faithful service and for the legacy you leave behind. From all of us at Berkeley County EMS, we would like to extend a very special congratulations and heartfelt thank you to Battalion Chief Hope Port on her retirement after 23 years of service to Berkeley County EMS. Congratulations!

Received an Internal report of praise for one of our crew members, AEMT Chad Callahan. This one hits close for me.

"Mr. Callahan had an overwhelming sympathetic and positive conversation with a patient suffering a mental health crisis; lowkey one of the most down-to-earth and caring interactions I had ever seen between a provider and a psychiatric patient. We had a new-hire medic of 16yrs doing orientation with us that day and he also was completely blown away by the kindness and patience he witnessed." - Paramedic FTO Kyle Simpson

This message speaks to me as a reminder. A reminder that often gets overlooked in our industry. Throughout the healthcare environment, mental health is often considered taboo and under-treated. All the skills we learn for saving lives are not what these patients need. Often times they are benefited most from someone just seeing them and keeping an open conversation. Thank you Chad for maintaining the compassion that makes a difference to the patients of our community. Its a great reminder of the impact we have on our people.

EDIT: The EMT Trainee position is now closed with 71 applicants!

Good Day Followers of Berkeley County EMS! We are thrilled to publicly announce that we have been APPROVED for 24/72s!

We currently run 15 ambulances; 6 are on 12 hour Day/Night rotations and the other 9 are on 24/48s. Beginning in the first quarter of 2027, we will be transitioning the nine 24/48 ambulances to a 24/72 rotation! This adds a significant amount of new staff positions.

With these new staffing positions, we are looking for 12 Non-Credentialed people to enter into a paid EMT Academy. Berkeley County EMS has been proud of our "Grow your own" initiative in which we help bolster the industry by bringing in new candidates to the profession rather than just recruiting from elsewhere.

Good day followers of Berkeley County EMS Social media!

Thank you for being a part of our online community. Today we received a great report from one of our new hires to highlight two members of our team. Daniel Cobiella is a Paramedic with over a decade and a half of experience in a variety of EMS environments. He recently joined our team and had hit the streets today. He had a wonderful first impression of our team as he gave some phenomenal praise about his Field Training Officer and partner Kyle Simpson and Morgan Burnette.

"As a paramedic that has gone through field training with multiple agencies, I found these two clinicians to be exceptionally informative, professional, welcoming, with a positive attitude. I appreciate being placed with such a great crew as my first impression of my future work life here at BCEMS." - Paramedic Daniel Cobiella

Being able to function with the stress of running 911 calls while also being able to guide newcomers to our agency is a critical piece of our Field Training Program. Most of the time, this is an "okay" experience for orientees across the industry; often time indicating that a lot of places just give minimal familiarization and send off to the truck. Taking the time to invest in our people, showing them the proper way to do things and setting the standard is a very important role we perform. Thank you to Paramedic Kyle Simpson and AEMT Morgan Burnette for being great representatives of Berkeley County EMS!
