Answering the Last Call: George Comstock
It is with the deepest sadness that I share the passing of our brother, mentor, colleague, and Treasurer Emeritus, George Comstock.
In recognition of George's lifetime of service, dedication, and leadership, I have lowered the flag at MOVAC to half staff as a small gesture to honor a man whose impact on this organization and the communities we are privileged to serve was immeasurable.
George devoted a lifetime to serving others through emergency medical services. He began his EMS career many years ago and eventually found his way to S&S Ambulance, where he served as its last Chief, known throughout the region simply as S&S 1. Following the merger with MOVAC, he continued that same unwavering commitment to our organization and to the communities we are privileged to serve. Long before that merger, he had already dedicated himself to serving the communities that now make up our Northern Region.
The communities of MOVAC's Northern Region, especially Dolgeville, Manheim, Salisbury, and Stratford, meant a great deal to him. Not simply because he served them, but because they were his home. While George was a dedicated public servant, he was first and foremost a proud husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and son. Family was always foremost in his heart. He never forgot where he came from, and he carried that pride, passion, and dedication into everything he did. George reminded us that our history matters and that every community deserves our very best, as though we were caring for our own family.
Over the years, George became far more than the many titles he held, including volunteer, EMT, Chief, Treasurer, officer, and Board member. He was a trusted friend, mentor, and leader whose dedication helped shape not only MOVAC, but also S&S Ambulance before it and the communities both organizations are privileged to serve. His titles never defined him. What defined George was his wisdom, his humility, and his unwavering willingness to help others. To those of us who had the privilege of serving beside him, George was a steady voice in the room, offering sage advice, perspective, and leadership through the greatest challenges and greatest successes. That example is, and always will be, George's greatest legacy.
After consulting with Board members Heidi Camardello, Andy Kenyon, and Dave Yanney, MOVAC will honor George's memory by renaming the annual community service scholarship presented at Dolgeville Central School to the graduating senior who has completed the greatest number of community service hours.
Therefore, effective immediately, I am renaming the award to the Comstock–Rzeszot S&S Legacy Award for Community Service, recognizing the extraordinary examples set by both George Comstock and Ed Rzeszot. These two men dedicated their lives to service above self. It is our hope that every student who receives this award will be inspired to follow in their footsteps and embrace a lifetime of service to others in any community they are blessed to call home.
George never sought recognition or praise. He simply believed in serving others, doing the right thing, caring for his family and his community, and leaving every place stronger than he found it. It is only fitting that future generations will now know his name, learn his story and, I hope, follow his example. Through that example, George's influence will continue to be felt for generations to come, just as it has already been felt in the countless lives he touched over decades of selfless service.
On behalf of the MOVAC Board of Directors, our leadership team, employees, volunteers, and the entire MOVAC family, I extend our deepest sympathies to George's family and loved ones.
Rest easy, George. Thank you for your lifetime of service, your friendship, your mentorship, your wisdom, and your unwavering commitment to your family, your community, and the people you served. Your watch has ended, but your legacy will endure through the example you set.
Please keep George's wife, Sharon, family, friends, and all who loved him in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
