Our history

At a June 29, 1914 meeting, John Wesley Ijames was appointed to a committee to buy land and build Poplar Springs School for the black children of the community. The school board donated $200 toward the cost, and the neighborhood paid the rest. The school consisted of one large room and was heated by wood. One teacher taught grades 1-8. The school was open until 1950 when the school bo

ard decided to close it. On February 19, 1951, Poplar Springs was sold to W.H. Boyd for $725. Shar and Darby Beck later purchased the property the school was on from the Boyd family. In 2004 the Becks agreed to give Vauda and Robert Ellis the school and they moved it to the present site at 660 Ijames Church Road. Renovations were completed in 2006.

Thanks to everyone that came out to Poplar Springs School todayfor our 1st Saturday of Open House! We appreciate your support year after year and love meeting our 1st time customers! We’ll work to get new treasures in for next Saturday(13th). We will be open 9:00-2:00 . Hope to see you there!
