The Mobile County Sheriff’s Posse Auxiliary was established in 1957 as a volunteer unit to assist and support the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office as needed. The Posse has traditionally provided assistance during special events, notably leading out for the Inaugural Day Parade, and is primarily recognized for presenting the Colors for numerous Mobile Mardi Gras organizations. Over the past 70 years, however, the Posse has received limited in-person support from acting Sheriffs. As the current President of The Mobile County Sheriff’s Posse and an active member for the past decade, I would like to share my observations since Sheriff Paul Burch officially assumed office in January 2023.
Upon taking office, Sheriff Burch prioritized communication with the Sheriff’s Posse, listening to our concerns and emphasizing the necessity of maintaining a strong and active Posse. He expressed a clear intent to restore the Posse’s visibility within the community and expanded our mission to include both ceremonial duties and Search and Rescue operations, recognizing that mounted units can navigate rough terrain and wooded areas inaccessible by vehicles. Beyond setting these goals, Sheriff Burch has been personally involved in our success. He has attended meetings and horseback trainings after working long hours and assisted in updating and amending our By-laws.
Sheriff Paul Burch has demonstrated unwavering integrity, honor, and pride and his hands-on leadership and steadfast support—in and out of the saddle—have been instrumental to the growth and renewed strength of our organization.
