Mobile's medical history is built on the shoulders of giants. 🏛️✨ This Black History Month, we're diving deep into the legacies of two titans who paved the way.
Dr. H. Roger Williams (1869-1929) was a trailblazer who graduated from Meharry Medical School and became the second Black physician to practice in Mobile. In 1901, he opened the 'Live and Let Live' drugstore, proving that economic empowerment and healthcare go hand-in-hand. He wasn't just a doctor; he was a poet and a community leader who championed our people when they needed it most.
Dr. James Alexander Franklin, Sr. (1886-1972) followed with a legendary career of his own. A University of Michigan grad, he was known as 'The South’s Richest Negro Doctor,' but his true wealth was his service. He saw up to 100 patients a day and famously never turned anyone away. His dedication laid the groundwork for what is now the Franklin Primary Health Center, serving over 40,000 people today.
That's the standard of excellence we’re passing on. Through our Purposeful Investigation of Careers in Healthcare (PICH) program, we’re helping our students navigate the world of Health & Wellness with that same spirit of service and leadership. 🩺💼
We aren't just teaching them about careers; we’re showing them how to build a legacy. 🔥
