USNS Solomon Atkinson (T-ATS-12) was named by Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro in honor Chief Warrant Officer 4 Solomon Atkinson. Sol, or Pop as his children and grandchildren called him, was a trailblazer, decorated war fighter, and proud Alaskan native whose service help shaped both of US Navy and the nations space program. One of the first 60 Navy SEALs and a plank holder of SEAL Team One, Sol played a foundational role in establishing one of the world's most elite special operations forces.
Warrant Officer Atkinson began his 22 year career with the Navy in 1952 after enlisting and volunteering for the Underwater Demolition Teams, the precursor to the SEALs. He served in Korea and completed three combat tourism in Vietnam, earning the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and the Navy Captain Medal with Combat “V”. He applied his diving expertise to train astronauts such as Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Jim Lovell in underwater weightless simulations. After leaving behind a legacy of excellence, innovation, and service, Sol returned home to Alaska to serve as a two-time mayor of Metlakatla, and founder of the first veterans organization on Annette Island.
We are proud to honor CW 04 Solomon Atkinson for his extraordinary contributions, pioneering spirit and enduring legacy. His attributes of selfless service and determination to his family, community, Navy, and nation how do I put, will carry forward to his namesake ship, USNS Solomon Atkinson (T-ATS 12).
