A Busy Few Weeks at GST! 🌟

It’s been a packed few weeks full of accomplishments, celebrations, and recognitions at GST!

🎖️ DC1 Hollister was recognized as our Sailor of the Quarter for his exceptional contributions and hard work. Bravo Zulu, DC1 Hollister!

🎉 We kicked off the holiday season with our annual holiday party, bringing together the team and our families for food, fun, and festive cheer over a few rounds of golf.

⭐️ We were honored to host Captain Moberley, Commander of the National Strike Force, who recognized our members:
• YN2 Seligson for being one of the Coast Guard’s first 50 Resilience Coordinators, making a lasting impact on member wellness.
• LT Smith and BM1 Folsom for leading a su***de awareness, prevention, and response training, ensuring our team is equipped to support one another in meaningful ways.

🏅 LCDR Tatum received the Coast Guard Achievement Medal for her outstanding work as a Planning Section Chief during the response to an oil pipeline leak in Louisiana. Her efforts were critical to the operation’s success and demonstrated exceptional leadership.

From individual accomplishments to team celebrations, GST continues to showcase the strength and dedication of our people. We’re proud of everything this team achieves day in and day out!

⚓️Honoring MSTC Burnett’s 20 Years of Service 🌟

This past weekend was bittersweet for GST as we celebrated the retirement of MSTC Burnett, one of our dedicated reservists, after 20 years of service. Chief Burnett was joined by his wife and three sons as we recognized his incredible career and contributions to the Coast Guard.

In his two years with GST, Chief Burnett has been a vital part of leading our reserve forces, bringing exceptional leadership and commitment to our team. While we’re sad to see him go, we are so grateful for his service and the legacy he leaves behind.

Holiday Feast with Friends and Family 🦃

The GST team came together to celebrate the season with a wonderful holiday feast, joined by friends and family. It was a great opportunity to relax, connect, and enjoy some incredible food while reflecting on all we’ve accomplished together this year.

Leadership Visit 🚨

GST recently welcomed Captain Matthew A. Moyer, Chief of the Office of Specialized Forces, and Commander Ian J. Murray, National Strike Force CBRN Division Chief, for an insightful visit to our unit.

During their time with us, we provided a comprehensive briefing on our updated capabilities and highlighted some of our recent significant cases. Our specialists also shared ideas on how we can continue to improve NSF response capabilities. The visit wrapped up with a tour of our facilities and some static displays showcasing our equipment and expertise.

It was an honor to host Captain Moyer and Commander Murray and have the opportunity to highlight the vital work we do at GST. Thank you for your leadership and support! 💪⚓️

Veterans Day Parade 🇺🇸

This Veterans Day, GST proudly participated in the Mobile Area Veterans Day Parade, alongside our partners from Sector Mobile, Aviation Training Center Mobile, and the Mobile Coast Guard Auxiliary.

It was a privilege to honor our veterans and their service while connecting with the community. From marching in the parade to showcasing our team’s pride and professionalism, it was a memorable day for all involved.

Halloween Fun and Recognitions at GST! 🎃👻

We had a fantastic Halloween celebration at GST, complete with some well-deserved recognitions!

🎃 YN1 Dale took home the win in our pumpkin carving contest with his creative and skillful designs!
🎭 Our Deck Division went all out with amazing costumes, bringing the Halloween spirit to the team!

We also celebrated some big achievements:
• LT Smith and YN2 Seligson earned their Response Operations Ashore Insignia—congrats on this milestone!
• MST1 Austin is now our newest certified CDL operator, ready to keep our trucks moving.

A big Bravo Zulu to everyone for their hard work and dedication—and for making this Halloween one to remember! 🎉

Mission Accomplished in St. Pete! 🌊🚁

Our team has just returned from supporting post-hurricane operations with U.S. Coast Guard Sector St Petersburg, and what an impact their teamwork made! Over the course of the deployment, our 10 members worked across 5 counties, helping to identify over 650 vessels, conducting 72 drone (SR-UAS) flights, and safely removing 1,420 gallons of oil from the affected areas.

Beyond vessel recovery and cleanup, our team contributed to the protection of endangered species, vital habitats, and historic coastal sites, showcasing the true reach and importance of our mission. This deployment also gave our newest members the chance to put their skills to the test and make a difference in communities in need.

We couldn’t be prouder of our team’s dedication and hard work. Bravo Zulu! ⚓️💪

Busy Days at GST! 🌟

It’s been a whirlwind at GST with lots to celebrate!

We recently bid farewell to our beloved Supply Officer, CWO4 Jonathan Brooks, who was recognized with the Coast Guard Commendation Medal and received a personalized departing gift. Thankfully, he’s not going far, as he’s transferring over to Sector Mobile.

Congratulations to MST1 Underwood for being named the Deployable Specialized Forces 2023 Emergency Responder of the Year! MST1 Underwood was also awarded for her exceptional support during the Maui Wildfire Response.

MST1 Carr was honored with her 5th Good Conduct Award for her continued dedication and professionalism.

DC1 Colangelo reached a significant milestone by qualifying as a Response Technician, and MST1 Underwood advanced to Response Supervisor!

ETC Davis and DC1 Colangelo earned their NSF CDL Operator designations, getting them ready to hit the road with our HRMT equipment.

BM1 Hallenbeck achieved qualifications as Flood Responder and Flood Response Coxswain, showcasing his commitment to readiness in emergencies.

Lastly, a special shoutout to YN1 Dale, who was presented with his CG Legal Program Paralegal and Legal Technician Insignia!

Showing Our Skillset in Action ⚓️

GST members have been hard at work for the past few weeks on a Hazardous Substance (HAZSUB) response. Following a recent chemical release, our team was called in to support clean-up and mitigation efforts. Demonstrating our wide-ranging capabilities, GST provided critical expertise and even deployed our expert drone (SR-UAS) operators to enhance the operation.

Another testament to our commitment and readiness to respond any time, anywhere, any hazard.

GST’s Catastrophic Incident Search and Rescue (CISAR) team loaded up and hit the road today for support of Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) operations for hurricane MILTON.

Response Member Boot Camp: Mission Complete! 🚨

Our newly reported members have successfully completed Response Member Boot Camp, the first big step toward joining GST’s response operations. Over the past week, they tackled everything from classroom lessons to hands-on exercises, gaining the knowledge and skills they’ll need in the field.

They covered a wide range of topics including mission funding, confined space operations, and even a large pump load exercise. This intensive training not only tested their abilities but also prepared them for real-world scenarios.

With their qualification boards just around the corner, these members will soon be out the door, ready to join responses across the nation. For those new to the Strike Teams, Response Member is the entry-level qualification, but from here the journey continues: E6 and below will begin working toward Response Technician, E7 toward Response Supervisor, and Officers toward Response Officer.

We’re proud of their hard work and can’t wait to see them in action! 💪

🌪️ Proud to share that our CISAR team was featured by U.S. Coast Guard Southeast for their incredible efforts during Hurricane HELENE! 🚁

The team worked tirelessly alongside partner agencies to execute critical search and rescue operations, ensuring the safety of those impacted by the storm. From marine support to boots on the ground, the coordination and expertise of our crew played a vital role in the hurricane response.

We’re proud of our team’s dedication to service and their commitment to protecting communities during such challenging times. Well done, CISAR team! 💪👏
