The Africatown Bridge Challenge 5K and Fun Run will be held Saturday, June 6 beginning at 7:30 a.m. The event, sponsored by the Africatown Community Development Corporation, is a run or walk over the Cochrane-Africatown Bridge above the Mobile River with post-race celebrations to follow at 645 Shelby St.

The Mobile County Commission is launching its America 250 celebration with a Youth Civic Reflection Contest, inviting Mobile County students to answer the question: “250 Years Later, What Does Freedom Mean to You Today?”

The contest is open to Mobile County students enrolled in grades K-12. Students may submit a photo or short reel with a 250-word caption or an original piece of artwork. Entries should be sent to [email protected].

Entries will be accepted June 1-22, with winners notified June 25 and invited to present their submissions at Government Plaza. The contest is the first of several events planned by the Mobile County Commission as part of the nationwide America 250 commemoration in 2026.

Urgent plea! Help move adoptable dogs and puppies to their forever homes or into Mobile County Animal Shelter’s foster program.

103 adoptable adult dogs and 32 puppies need homes or fostering (see them at https://bit.ly/4u8IhHV)

Adoption fees are $40 for adult dogs or $80 for puppies; discounts and sponsorships may apply.

Mobile County Animal Shelter adoptions include microchip, spay/neuter, flea and deworming treatments, rabies, and other vaccinations, as well as heartworm testing for dogs over 6 months old. Many of these adoptable adult dogs and puppies have already been spayed or neutered and can go to their forever homes today.

RESOLUTION IN HONOR & RECOGNITION OF DARWIN SINGLETON UPON HIS RETIREMENT

WHEREAS: The Mobile County Commission proudly recognizes Darwin Singleton for an exceptional career spanning more than four decades in broadcast journalism, including nearly 40 years as a trusted and familiar voice to the people of Mobile County and the Gulf Coast; AND

WHEREAS: A native of Hazard, Kentucky, he began his career in radio before transitioning to television news in 1980, and in 1987 made his way to the Gulf Coast, where he would become a respected journalist, storyteller, and enduring presence in the lives of viewers across the region; AND

WHEREAS: Through his distinguished work with local news, Darwin informed and connected the community with authenticity and heart, including his signature “Where’s Darwin?” and “Here’s Darwin!” segments that captured the spirit, stories, and soul of south Alabama; AND

WHEREAS: Widely regarded as one of the Gulf Coast’s most recognizable media personalities, he championed the traditions and culture of Mobile, most notably its historic Carnival season, earning him the affectionate title of “Mr. Mardi Gras,” while consistently using his platform to uplift others and celebrate the community; AND

WHEREAS: Through his warmth, professionalism, and genuine connection with viewers, Darwin Singleton has become more than a journalist—he has been a trusted neighbor, a storyteller of our shared experiences, and a proud advocate for the place he calls home; NOW THEREFORE LET IT BE

RESOLVED: That the Mobile County Commission expresses its deepest gratitude to Darwin Singleton for his distinguished service and lasting contributions, congratulates him upon his retirement, and hereby proclaims May 29, 2026, as Darwin Singleton Day in Mobile County, encouraging all citizens to join in recognizing and celebrating his remarkable career and enduring impact on this community.
