Today marks Juneteenth. A day to Remember and Celebrate the Freedom of enslaved people in America.

Juneteenth is a call for both celebration and confrontation of the truth of our history. We celebrate freedom day as we remember the announcement made on June 19th, 1865 in Galveston Texas that slaves were free! We grieve the reality that this news came two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. May we as One Mobile celebrate today and continue on the path for justice by recognizing the truth of our history.

Please follow the City of Mobile page for more updates on our city’s trash collection.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 12, our trash collection crews will be continuing to make collections along their Thursday north routes. The areas these routes encompass are identified on the map below. Please remember that curbside trash is different from household garbage, which is collected weekly. The City of Mobile has also set up drop-off points for bagged yard debris ONLY at the following locations:

— Medal of Honor Park (1711 Hillcrest Rd.)
— Langan Park (4901 Zeigler Blvd.)
— Seals Park and Community Center (540 Texas St.)
— Trimmier Park (3600 Alba Club Rd.)

In light of the ruling yesterday of Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, in the death of George Floyd, Mobile’s Human Relations Commission stands firm in its commitment to addressing the inequalities, racism and inequity that still remains throughout our community. The work in our community doesn’t end with this verdict. It is a step in the right direction, but continued work of all citizens in the creation of a more just, equitable and compassionate community remains. George Floyd’s life matters. Black lives matter. And we will continue moving forward.

Mrs. Bridget Goff Archer serves as the District 6 appointee to the City of Mobile Human Relations Commission.

She is a long-time resident of Mobile County. She is a product of the Mobile County Public School System and is a long-time public-school teacher. She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in elementary education from the University of South Alabama and an Education Specialist degree from the University of West Alabama.

Bridget is on the board of the Junior League of Mobile, the vice president of the Rain Group, and service coordinator for Redeemer Episcopal Community Café. She also works with Family Promise, the CORE Project, and FOCUS Women’s conference. She often takes her family to volunteer events and believes that anyone can work to improve their community. She has two wonderful children that attend public school and her husband is a member of the Airbus team.

Mr. Tommie Carlisle Jr. serves as the District 7 appointee to the City of Mobile Human Relations Commission.

Tommie is a retired veteran from the U.S. Army of 28 years as a combat medic. He has attended the University of Alabama, Park College in Missouri, St. Phillips in Texas, and Webster University of St. Louis, Missouri, and holds a Master’s degree in Management/Health Care. He has continued studies in the area of Management at the University of South Alabama. He is a member of Smith Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church since 2012.

Tommie has contributed his energies during his earlier years in the struggle for human decency/rights in Birmingham and Jefferson County by participating in marches, demonstrations, and even jailed following the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King.

He has served on the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity, Mobile County as President. He was selected to the first Habitat for Humanity International Board of Directors, representing the southeastern United States and Puerto Rico, and was honored by the Mobile Press-Register. He has served as President of the University of South Alabama Lion’s Club and a graduate of Mobile United’s Leadership Mobile (Class of 2000).

He has also served as a Board member of Family Counseling Services of Mobile. He has been an officer and a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity (Mobile Alumni), where he was selected to be Man of the Year and Citizen of the Year. He currently serves on the board of the Mobile Police Citizens Community Relations Advisory Council.

He is married to his lovely wife Mary (for almost 50 years) and they have two children and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Morgan Spivey serves as the District 5 appointee to the City of Mobile Human Relations Commission.

Morgan works full-time as an Associate Licensed Counselor in her private practice Spivey Counseling and Wellness, LLC. She also works as an administrator for the Christian Medical Ministry of South Alabama. She moved to Mobile twenty years ago to attend the University of South Alabama where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Morgan completed her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Troy University last year and is passionate about engaging the stories of people.

It is her hope that the mutual trust, respect, and healing that transpires within the counseling relationship as she enters stories of trauma will translate to healing within the city and community of Mobile. She is passionate about racial reconciliation, looking at the stories and history of this city with honesty and integrity, and believes that we are better together.

Morgan’s husband Matt is a lifelong educator, and together they pursue equity and justice within the education system of their city. In their spare time, they enjoy time with each other and their three amazing children.
