(I Conserve And Conquer)
Alabama Army National Guard CONSERVO ET SUPERO, the Battalion motto, is Latin for “I Conserve And Conquer.”

The 161st Medical Battalion (Multifunctional) is a unit in the Alabama Army National Guard that is headquartered in Mobile, Alabama. It can trace its lineage back to the organization of the Mobile Rifle Company, organized in February 1836 and mustered the following May as the Regiment of Alabama Volunteers to serve in the Mexican War. Called into Confederate service as Company K, 3rd Alabama Infan

try, the unit took part Civil War battles beginning with the Peninsula campaign in 1862 and culminating with Appomattox Courthouse, including such famous tilts as Sharpsburg (Antietam), Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, to name just a few. In the modern era, the unit’s predecessors have served in World War I, World War II (New Guinea and Southern Philippines campaigns) and Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Since 1897, the year it became part of the Alabama National Guard, it has been re-designated 15 times before it became the 161st Medical Battalion in 1996.

The Battalion had a bittersweet Saturday as we celebrated the retirement of our Battalion Commander, LTC Ronald Santana. Over the past year, LTC Santana brought his extensive experience and knowledge to the Soldiers of the 161st, allowing us to thrive and perform at new levels. The admiration shown from so many friends, family members, and Soldiers spoke volumes of his amazing leadership and impact he has had during his career. We wish LTC Santana all the best with this new chapter of his life and thank him for his hard work and dedication to the unit. Although his time has come to an end here, we are excited to welcome our new Battalion Commander, LTC Troy Quizon!

Two major bills were signed into Alabama law this session that enhance legal and disciplinary systems for the Alabama National Guard:

✅ SB179 updates the Alabama Code of Military Justice, giving commanders clearer authority for non-judicial punishment and promoting fairness and accountability across all ranks.

✅ SB198 establishes the Alabama National Guard Legal Assistance Program. Offering free legal support to Guardsmen, retirees, and their families!

These updates help ensure our Soldiers and Airmen are mission-ready, protected, and supported at every level.
