📁 Safeguard Your Important Documents Before Disaster Strikes

When disaster strikes, your first priority will be keeping yourself and your loved ones safe. Once the immediate danger has passed, however, having access to important financial, medical, insurance, and personal records can make the recovery process much easier.
Take time now to:
✅ Collect and inventory important documents such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, Social Security information, insurance policies, property records, vehicle titles, financial records, medical information, prescriptions, and emergency contacts.
🛡️ Store originals safely in a secure, portable container—ideally one that is waterproof and fire-resistant. Make sure it is easy to take with you if you need to evacuate quickly.
💻 Create digital copies of important documents and store them securely somewhere you can access remotely, such as a secure cloud-based storage service.
📸 Document your valuables and priceless personal items. Take photos or videos and create an inventory of items you would want to protect from damage—or take with you during an evacuation.
📞 Include important contact information with your records, including emergency contacts and the phone numbers or other contact information you may need during recovery.

Preparing now can provide peace of mind, help ensure access to essential information and prescriptions, and reduce stress during the difficult days following a disaster.

🌡️ The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Warning for portions of Mobile County and a heat advisory for the remainder of the county. As your local emergency management agency, we urge everyone to take the heat seriously and take steps to protect yourself and others.

💧 Stay hydrated and drink water regularly.
🏠 Spend time in air-conditioned or cool locations.
🕐 Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
👀 Check on family, friends, neighbors, and those who may be especially vulnerable to extreme heat.
🚗 NEVER leave children, pets, or anyone else in a parked vehicle.
⚠️ Know the signs of heat illness, including dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness, confusion, and loss of consciousness. If you suspect heat stroke, call 911 immediately and move the person to a cooler location.

Please share this information and help us keep our community safe during this period of extreme heat.

An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for areas closer to the coast, with a Heat Advisory in effect elsewhere. Remember to take frequent breaks in the shade and drink plenty of fluids.

☀️🐾 Extreme heat can be dangerous for our pets. A little extra preparation can help keep your four-legged family members safe and comfortable this summer.

💧 Keep fresh, cool water available at all times.
🌳 Provide plenty of shade and a cool place to rest.
🐕 Walk dogs during the cooler parts of the day, and check pavement before heading out—it can burn sensitive paw pads.
🚗 Never leave a pet alone in a parked car, even for a short time. Temperatures can become dangerously hot very quickly.
🐱 Keep cats out of direct sun during the hottest part of the day and watch for signs of overheating.
⚠️ Watch for excessive panting, weakness or lethargy, stumbling, vomiting, drooling, or unusually red gums or tongue. Heat stroke is an emergency—contact a veterinarian immediately if you see concerning symptoms.

Remember: if it’s too hot for you, it may be too hot for your pet. ❤️🐾

Heat Advisory: Stay Safe and Stay Cool

With an ongoing heat advisory, limit your exposure to extreme heat. Stay indoors or in air conditioning when possible, especially from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Looking to cool off? Check local parks and recreation resources for public pools, splash pads, designated swimming areas, cooling centers and other options. If visiting a natural waterway, use designated swimming areas and follow posted water-safety guidance.

🌡️ Cooling Centers Open Around the Clock — For As Long As the Heat Persists

With heat indices remaining dangerously high, local cooling resources are available for anyone who needs a safe, cool place to escape the extreme heat. These resources will remain open as long as these extreme heat conditions continue.

With heat indices remaining dangerously high, Waterfront Rescue Mission’s Day Center will remain open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as a cooling center for as long as these extreme heat conditions continue.

This is a temporary measure to help our community stay safe during this period of dangerous heat. Once heat indices return to safer levels, the Day Center will return to its regular schedule.

If you or someone you know needs a safe, cool place to escape the extreme temperatures, please come in and take advantage of this resource.

🎒 They know their bus route. Do they know your emergency plan?
Before your children head back to school, take a few minutes to review your family emergency communication plan together.
Make sure everyone knows:
📍 WHERE to meet — Choose a primary and backup emergency meeting location.
📱 HOW to connect — Identify at least two communication methods that are appropriate for your child’s age, from calling and texting to email, social media, or a family locator app.
☎️ WHO to contact — Choose an out-of-area family member or trusted friend who can serve as your emergency contact if local communication is disrupted.
📝 WHAT to remember — Write down important phone numbers, emergency contacts, and meeting locations. Keep a copy in your child’s backpack and another in a central location at home, such as on the refrigerator or family bulletin board.
🔄 WHAT to do — Talk through a few “what if?” situations and practice your plan.
Your child’s emergency plan should grow with them. What works for a young child may be different from what works for a middle or high school student.
A few minutes of preparation now can help your family stay connected, calm, and confident if an emergency happens when you’re apart.
