Friday brought a big win and milestone to Grand County. The Utah Transportation Commission voted unanimously to invest $1M in a Moab-to-Arches shuttle pilot.

This support reflects months of collaborative work, accelerating earlier this year when the County Commission appointed three Commissioners to lead a shuttle working group. This group has been meeting every other week with Arches Superintendent Lena Pace and staff, UDOT, federal transportation planners, Department of Interior representatives, state stakeholders, and Moab Mayor Joette Langianese to design a pilot that fits our community and the park.

A local match requirement is next on the County Commission's agenda for consideration. Read the full agenda background → https://grandcounty.org/Shuttle-Agenda

Saturday, May 16, is Adventure Safe Day — Utah’s first-ever statewide effort to remind all of us that a little preparation makes a big difference before heading outdoors.

📍 Dead Horse Point State Park is one of the official Adventure Safe Day locations. Stop by to say hi to the team, look for the flags and signage, and pick up free safety checklists, activity books, water bottles, and stickers while learning how to recreate safely across Utah’s public lands.

Andrea Brand, Director of the Sand Flats Recreation Area, shared what she hopes residents and visitors keep top of mind heading into high desert summer:

“Adventure Safe Day is a chance to remind visitors to be safe when recreating in Utah, particularly in the Moab area. The most important thing is to plan your trip. Make sure the trail matches your skill level and stay on the trail. Bring a map and don’t rely solely on your digital device. Ensure your vehicle, bike, or motorcycle is in top operating condition. Sand Flats trails range from intermediate to extreme. Wear appropriate clothes and protective gear. We’re getting into the desert summer season — carry a gallon of water per person per day, electrolytes, and high-energy food. Bring a first-aid kit and a tool kit. Start early in the day to avoid the heat and, importantly, let someone know your itinerary.”

Heads up if you’re planning to travel US-6 this summer or fall: construction at Thistle Junction (the US-6/US-89 intersection) begins Friday, May 8, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction through early November.

UDOT is replacing the existing intersection with a new grade-separated interchange to improve safety. All directions of travel will remain open, but plan for delays of up to 15 minutes on weekdays and up to 1.5 hours on weekends and holidays.

A few tips:
• Travel outside peak hours when possible
• Consider alternate routes via I-70 and I-15
• Check current conditions at udottraffic.utah.gov

The new interchange is expected to open in mid-November 2026. More project info: udotinput.utah.gov/us6thistlesafety

Noticed new cameras or tube counters along Mill Creek Drive, Spanish Valley Road, or Spanish Trail Road this week? Here's what's going on.

They're temporary traffic-counting devices deployed for the Moab–Grand Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Safety Action Plan — a joint City of Moab and Grand County effort to improve safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians along these corridors. Most will be removed by Saturday.

What the cameras do — and don't — do:
• They measure traffic volume, speed, and pedestrian/bicycle counts.
• They are NOT monitored live.
• They do NOT capture faces, license plates, or any personal information.
• Data is stored on a private, secure server and deleted once analyzed.

Grand County, we have air service options — and they’re good ones.

Four airlines have submitted proposals to be Grand County’s next Essential Air Service carrier at Canyonlands Regional Airport. That’s the most competitive field we’ve seen, and it means airlines are paying attention to what’s happening here.

We’re sharing some important things before the Commission vote Tuesday — what EAS actually is, how codeshare agreements work, what each carrier is offering, and what happens next. We also built a quick tool that lets you rank what matters most to you in air service and see which carrier best matches your priorities.

This is your air service. Take a look and share with your neighbors: https://grandcounty.org/air-service-article
