The Prickly Pear! These cacti bloom every year going into the summertime, in different colors too. They can come in pinks, yellows, and oranges! They bloom flowers so that they can attract a pollinator or two, to help the species survive.

Prickly Pear can be found throughout the park, including along our Prickly Pair Bike Trail! See how many you can find when you visit Dead Horse Point State Park!

As the park has flowers blooming, we have noticed more bees pollinating! These cute creatures fit perfectly in these absolutely gorgeous flowers. If you see one of these carpenter bees, make sure to stop and thank them for pollinating.

Yesterday, Dead Horse Point State Park staff met with members of the Mongolian Nature's Legacy Foundation, including representatives from the Government of Mongolia, civil society, the private sector, and the international conservation community, to discuss Utah's land management efforts and inspire dialogue around public land conservation.

We're grateful for the visitation of the Mongolian Nature's Legacy Foundation, and look forward to seeing them accomplish their goal of protecting and sustainably managing 30% of Mongolia's land by 2030!

There are lots of different plants that thrive here at Dead Horse Point State Park. Penstemon Palmeri can be found growing in bunches around the park. It is a light pink or lavender color flower that can grow 2 to 5 feet tall! It requires full sun, rocky soils, and little water making the desert a perfect place for them to thrive. When visiting Dead Horse Point State Park take a look around at the variety of plants we have to offer!

Have you wanted to check out another great overlook in the park, besides the Dead Horse Point Overlook? Then you’re in luck.

The Bighorn Overlook is another great viewpoint in the park. This trail is 3.2 miles round trip and usually takes about 1.5 hours to complete.

The difficulty of this trail is rated easy, with only subtle elevation changes. The hike begins on the West Rim Trail, and after a short distance, you will merge onto the Bighorn Overlook Trail.

If you have the time, we definitely recommend checking out this hike. You’ll experience great views and hopefully some solitude as well.

As it is warming up, our mountain bike trails will be a little busier than normal, and we’d love to see you hit the trails! However, there are a few things we’d like to say so that you guys can use the trails safely!
First on the list, please bring water! We recommend a gallon of water per person per day.
Second, uphill will always have the right of way. That means that if you are rolling down the mountain and see someone riding up the mountain, please stop and let them pass.
Third, if you are behind a hiker on the trail and would like to pass, please call out to them that you would like to pass when you get about 20 feet behind them. If they are coming towards you, stop, and let them pass.

The Great Basin Gopher Snake and the Midget Faded Rattlesnake are two common snakes found here at Dead Horse Point State Park. They do share a similar appearance but rattlesnakes are about half the size of gopher snakes. Rattlesnakes have a distinct rattle they use to warn predators of their presence so listen to your surroundings when on the trails. Rattlesnake bites are rare but if you are bitten be sure to call emergency services or find a ranger in the park. Make sure to keep the bitten area below heart level to slow venom spread. It is best to keep your distance from any snake that you may come across in the park. Have fun and stay safe while visiting Dead Horse Point State Park!

This summer, we're adding more stargazing options for your family at Dead Horse Point! 🌌

🔭 Star Party 🔭
At Star Parties, expect a Ranger Talk followed by deep sky exploration through the lens of a telescope. At Star Parties, you'll learn more about the science of the stars, including viewing a planetary nebula and discussing the life cycle of a star, and checking out distant galaxies while learning about the scale of the universe.

💫 Constellation Quest 💫
Choose your own space adventure! Constellation Quests begin with a Park Ranger recounting an epic story of a constellation, with the telescope focused on a single object. From here, the classic constellation adventures may branch and diverge depending on the choices of participants. Does Hercules slay the lion or fall to its claws? The choices you make will alter the story and affect where the telescope takes us!

🌠 Stargazing 🌠
Stargazing keeps it simple! No technology, no telescopes, just the naked eye and the stars above! During Stargazing programs, a Park Ranger will guide you through the stars, planets, clusters, asterisms, and constellations, and how to identify them from your back yard! Using only the stars of the Big Dipper, learn how to find your way north, and so much more!

All programs will include a segment on the importance of Dark Sky places, and information on how YOU can help protect the night skies!

Generally, Stargazing will occur Friday nights, followed by a telescope program the following night!

Historically, this is the busiest weekend of the year at Dead Horse Point State Park!

When visiting the park this weekend, including Monday, Memorial Day, please keep a few things in mind:

• KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Please check park conditions on our website prior to your visit. Remember to bring water and sunscreen! Dead Horse Point State Park is approximately 40 minutes away from the Town of Moab by way of Highway 313.
• Park Day Use hours are 6:00am to 10:00pm. Expect long lines around sunrise and sunset, in addition to the peak visitation period of 10:00am to 3:00pm.
• Please abide by all posted signage, including speed limits. Use extra caution near crosswalks or in congested areas.
• When approaching the park boundary, be on the look out for open range cattle, and report injured or deceased cattle immediately.
• There is limited parking at the Neck. Beyond the Neck, expect crowded parking lots with frequent turnover at Dead Horse Point Overlook.
• Hikers may access Dead Horse Point Overlook by the 1.5 mile East Rim Trail, or 3 mile West Rim Trail.
• Cyclists will be directed to park at the Mountain Bike Parking Lot. The Visitor Center may be accessed by cyclists via the 0.5 mile Intrepid Trail.
• If biking or hiking on the road, please stay single-file.
• Restrooms are available at all campgrounds, the Visitor Center, the Mountain Bike Lot, and at Dead Horse Point Overlook.
• There are NO public restrooms at the Entrance Station, and staff cannot provide special accommodations for bowel or bladder urgency. Long lines may be present at the Entrance Station. Please assist Rangers in keeping traffic moving by remaining in your car, with payment ready. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) maintains restrooms at several View Points and Campgrounds on the Mesa, but there are no restrooms between the Dead Horse Point State Park turn-off at the Knoll and the Moenkopi Yurts.
• Day Use fee for a single, standard vehicle is $20. America the Beautiful Passes are NOT accepted.
• Proof of Day Use Pass purchase may be requested by Park Rangers. Please keep your receipt on your dashboard.

If you stop and listen long enough at Dead Horse Point, you’ll probably hear the unmistakable croak of a raven overhead.

Ravens are some of the most intelligent birds in North America and are well adapted to life in the canyon country. They’ve been observed solving problems, using tools, playing games in the wind, and even recognizing individual human faces.

Out here, they patrol the cliffs and thermals like they own the place. Honestly, they kind of do.
