Did you know that Arches and Canyonlands experience their highest incident call volume when air temperatures are in the 80’s or 90’s? Remember to bring enough water, sun protection, food, and electrolytes - even if we experience cooler June temps.

Happy Birthday Bates Wilson!

257,640 acres

This was the size of Canyonlands National Park when it was first created. But who made it happen?

Bates Wilson was the most passionate and tireless advocate for creating a new national park in the canyon country of southeastern Utah. He personally guided politicians, journalists, and Interior Department officials on jeep tours through the remote terrain to make them fall in love with the landscape. His ability to connect people emotionally to the red rock wilderness of the Needles, the Maze, and Island in the Sky was instrumental in building the political will needed to push the park through Congress. When Canyonlands National Park was finally established in 1964, Wilson was named its first superintendent, earning him the lasting title "Father of Canyonlands."

In honor of his birthday please consider a donation of
$25.76 or $257.64

It’s worth mentioning that Bates originally proposed Canyonlands to be 1 million acres, so feel free to donate that amount! (A check might be better for that to avoid the credit card fees!)

Seeing What Others Didn’t — Bates Wilson & Canyonlands

Long before Canyonlands became a national park, Bates Wilson saw something extraordinary in its vast, rugged landscape. Where others saw remote and inaccessible terrain, he saw beauty, significance, and a place worth protecting for generations to come. His vision and persistence helped turn that belief into reality.

Today, every overlook, canyon, and winding river stands as a testament to his ability to recognize the magnificence of a place others had yet to fully appreciate. Because of that vision, millions can now experience the wonder of Canyonlands.

To celebrate Bates’ birthday on the 28th, we’re giving away free e-book copies of his biography.
