Mize High School U.S. History teacher Kyle Magee continued bringing history to life in his classroom on Monday, August 31, 2026, stepping into the role of legendary Old West lawman Wyatt Earp.

Magee’s class is currently studying the American West from approximately 1865 to 1890, a period when settlers, railroads, miners, ranchers, and the U.S. government rapidly transformed the Great Plains and western territories.

Students have explored Native American resistance and federal policies, cattle drives and cowboys, mining towns and the transcontinental railroad. The class also examined the differences between the historical American West and the “Wild West” portrayed in popular legend.

As part of the unit, students have learned about several notable figures of the era, including Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, George Custer, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Calamity Jane, Jesse James, and Buffalo Bill Cody.

A particular focus has been separating the historical people and events of the American West from the legends that developed around them.

Magee previously portrayed George Washington and Abraham Lincoln as part of his effort to make history more engaging and interactive for his students.
