Fire restrictions have been removed for FWP lands in west-central Montana counties. FWP follows the county’s lead in placing fire restrictions on its properties within that county. Mineral, Granite and Powell Counties all removed restrictions this week.

FWP urges people to use caution while recreating due to dry conditions and fire danger. Fire restrictions are still in place for FWP lands in other counties. Learn more about wildfire prevention and the latest information on fires in Montana at mtfireinfo.org.

🦌 Curious about mule deer populations in west-central Montana? Wildlife Manager, Liz Bradley, shares a few observations here.

✋ We'll be hosting an information session on Wednesday, September 23 at 6 p.m. at our FWP Missoula office (3201 Spurgin Rd). The gathering is a chance to hear from local wildlife biologists and ask questions about mule deer numbers, current research, and factors affecting their population in west-central Montana. For the second hour of the meeting, FWP’s wildlife health biologist, Bevin McCormick, will present on Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Montana.

📬 Our FWP biologists will again be collecting wings from hunter-harvested mountain grouse (dusky/blue, spruce, and ruffed grouse) across Region 2 this fall. A collection barrel is at our office in Missoula (3201 Spurgin Rd) just outside the front door. Submission is voluntary during the season (Sept. 1-Jan. 1), but samples help our biologists understand more about the grouse population than they would otherwise.

📦 Please put one wing from each harvested bird (from Region 2 only) into the barrel. Wings can also be turned into area wildlife staff or game wardens.

📈 Wings will be used to identify birds by species and age class (juvenile or adult). This information allows biologists understand more about our western Montana grouse and how many young birds are being recruited into the population.

While checking the payment box at Forest Grove Fishing Access Site along the Clark Fork River in Mineral County, our recreation ranger for that area disturbed a hornet that stung his hand.

"It continued to hover around me to attempt another sting," Ranger Goldy said. "But while I squared off with it, a robber fly (pictured here) came out of nowhere and with an audible 'thwack' snatched the hornet. It landed on a parked vehicle to enjoy it’s prize, where I was able to take this neat picture."

Here's to making the best out of a bit of a painful situation and even capturing a photo to share! Robber flies prey on insects (sometimes even bigger than themselves) and often catch them in flight. Its pretty fun to catch one in action.
