Help keep wildlife WILD this time of year:
▶ We're sure seeing deer fawns around our neighborhoods in western Montana a lot right now. Please remember that baby animals rarely need human help and giving them space is the best thing we can do.
▶ Many animals, like fawns, are left alone for long periods as a natural survival strategy. Getting too close can cause stress and may lead to injury for both you and the animal.
▶ Animals thrive in their natural habitats. It is incredibly stressful for wildlife to be handled by humans.
▶ No wildlife rehabilitators in the state, including FWP, are permitted to keep deer, elk or moose due to disease risk, so giving it a chance to survive on its own is the best bet.
▶ Wild animals are very resilient. Often what you think are life threatening injuries are not. If you come across an animal you believe needs help, leave it where it is and contact FWP for guidance.
🦌 Together, we can help keep wildlife wild this season. 🌼

❗️Heads up floaters: There is a hazard log in the Blackfoot River just above Ninemile Prairie FAS (and immediately above the float-in campsite). There is a raft trapped. Fortunately, the floaters were not hurt.

Please stay clear of the log and trapped raft and gear. There is room to float around on river left.

⚠️ Hazards like this could exist anywhere right now, and conditions can change quickly. We have higher flows on many rivers than we've seen in a while, and visible and hidden debris can be dangerous, with the ability to trap boats and people.

🛶 Check conditions before you go, wear your lifejacket, stop and scout ahead, and be prepared to portage around obstacles when needed.

Our recreation ranger in the Lower Clark Fork area was successful in spotting🔎another cool bird🐦while out visiting some of our local state parks and fishing access sites. This Lewis's Woodpecker was at Council Grove State Park, just west of Missoula, last week. Council Grove has a lot of wooded habitat near water, which is one common spot these birds like to hang out.

Read more on this woodpecker and many other species on our FWP online field guide: fieldguide.mt.gov/speciesDetail.aspx?elcode=ABNYF04010

Check out this fun, free family activity on Monday afternoons this summer at Travelers' Rest State Park near Lolo. Or, stop by the park and visitor center (open daily) to explore the history of the area.

Travelers’ Rest marks the intersection between cultural and natural history. Along the banks of Lolo Creek, the area was used for centuries by Native peoples, visited twice by the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery and is home to a diversity of plants and animals. One lake, four ponds, 251 fishing poles 🎣, over 800 students 🚌, 2,120 worms 🪱 and countless tangled lines later, our fishing field trips are wrapping up for the season!

Fourth and fifth graders across our western Montana communities (and many other communities across the state) participated in Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks' “Hooked on Fishing” program in school from January until May, learning from FWP staff and volunteers about fish identification, habitat, anatomy, how to tie flies, cast a pole, and release fish.

Then they get to put their skills to work at a fishing field trip at the end of the school year! Thanks to our many volunteers, teachers and staff that make these days possible.😊
