It's going to be a very chilly night across the Northern Rockies. As skies clear out this evening, valley temperatures across western Montana and north-central Idaho will plummet into the low to mid-30s, bringing widespread frost by Monday morning.
A Frost Advisory is in effect for many of our valleys. But heads up: even if you aren't in the highlighted advisory area, it is still going to be cold! Places like Butte / Seeley & Swan Valleys... you are expected to drop into the 20s overnight.
Whether you are in the advisory or not, make sure to cover up those sensitive outdoor plants and tomatoes before you head to bed tonight!

Before we get to the work week, an exiting weather system on Sunday will bring a few final showers and gusty westerly winds, making area lakes choppy for boaters. As skies clear Sunday night, watch out for patchy frost in outlying areas, it might be a good time to cover those sensitive plants.

Monday looks to be the driest day of the week, though clouds will increase late. By Tuesday, a cool trough originating from the Gulf of Alaska will descend upon the region, followed by a secondary push of moisture later in the week. What does this mean for you? Expect a chilly backcountry, breezy conditions, and even some snow dipping down to 6,200 feet at times. Temperatures will stay cooler than average with plenty of moisture to keep the plants happy, though it might not be prime weather for those wanting to cut hay just yet.

[Update Sat. morning: The probabilities for a frost have trended lower for Sunday morning due to clouds/shower chances, but are still on track for Monday morning]🌱 ATTENTION GARDENERS: We are tracking the potential for late-season frost this coming Sunday and Monday mornings (June 7-8).

☁️ The Wildcard: Cloud cover. If the skies clear out overnight, temperatures across the region could easily drop into the low-to-mid 30s.

🧤 What to do: If you have already planted tender vegetables, annuals, or sensitive potted plants outside, you may want to prepare to cover them up or bring them indoors Sunday night.

We will keep a close eye on the sky cover and update you as we get closer to the weekend! 📉

🌡️ MAY 2026 CLIMATE RECAP: A warm month across the board for Western Montana and Central Idaho, with the 5 sites finishing above normal temperatures.

🌧️ A Tale of Two Climates: May precipitation was highly localized. Missoula and Kalispell had a soaking month (Kalispell hit 172% of its normal rainfall!). Meanwhile, Central Idaho was relatively dry—with Pierce and Salmon receiving less than 45% of their typical May moisture.

🏔️ The Big Picture: Despite a dry May in Idaho, the broader look is great news. Thanks to a strong winter and spring, our Water Year precipitation (since Oct 1st) remains near or above normal for the entire region!

🌧️So how much rain did we get? Here's a map showing rainfall amounts from Friday morning (5/29) through this morning (6/2). The lion's share fell along the Continental Divide, Mission, and Swan ranges. The highest total was 6.1 inches at the Moss Peak SNOTEL. The site sits at 6760 feet in elevation in the northern Mission Range east of Polson, where there is still over four feet of snow still on the ground.
