Project Update!

Thanks to the hard work of our nonprofit partners, the Bitterroot Trail Preservation Alliance (BTPA), two new trailside benches have been installed along the Bitterroot Trail between Missoula and Lolo. The project was supported in part through Missoula County's Community Parks & Recreation Grants Program.

These benches provide trail users with a comfortable place to stop, rest, and enjoy views of the Bitterroot River and surrounding scenery.

We're grateful for the dedicated volunteers and community organizations that help enhance our parks, trails, and public spaces. Great work, BTPA!

Heads up!

⚠️Missoula – MDT and Pavement Maintenance Services Inc. will begin applying a seal and cover (chip seal) at eight sites the week of June 15, weather and unforeseen factors permitting. During application there will be temporary disruptions to driveways and other access points. When fresh chip seal oil is applied to the street in front of an access point, that access point cannot be used for approximately 30 minutes.

On-street parking will also be temporarily disrupted. To avoid towing, all vehicles parked on the streets within work zones will need to be moved prior to construction.

Chip seal work is expected to take a few days to complete, with temporary pavement markings being applied over the weekend, July 19 to 21. After temporary paint has been applied, construction will pause until late July when crews are expected to return to apply the permanent pavement markings.

If you receive a green postcard in the mail, it's a jury notice that you're in the pool of people who may be selected for jury duty in Missoula County Justice Court over the next year.

These are mailed to potential jurors every year, and you don't need to respond to it.

You may receive a jury summons in the future, which means you've been randomly selected to potentially serve on a jury for a case should it go to trial. If you receive a summons, you need to respond to confirm you received it. Many cases are settled before they go to trial.

Missoula’s first closed-loop 24-hour race comes to Missoula County's Big Sky Park this summer! Run Wild Missoula is hosting the Dog Days Ultra from Aug. 22 to 23.

The land that we now know as Big Sky Park was once part of the Fort Missoula Military Reservation, which was established by an 1878 executive order from President Ulysses S. Grant.

Big Sky Park is now home to public recreation facilities like baseball and softball fields, competition-level equestrian facilities and an archery course.

The Fort Missoula campus has long been a center for physical activity. Soldiers at the Fort performed physical training, including regular runs. In 1896, US Army Lieutenant James A. Moss formed a Bicycle Corps from members of the 25th Infantry Buffalo Soldiers. The following year, the Bicycle Corps completed an epic 1,900-mile ride from Missoula to St. Louis, Missouri over 41 days.

The name “Dog Days” is a reference both to the time of year and to Fort Missoula’s unofficial mascot, Sergeant Bozo. In 1928, soldiers at the Fort adopted a stray three-week-old puppy. By 1932, Bozo had won the hearts of Fort Missoula’s soldiers and was given the title of Honorary Master Sergeant. Bozo had his run of the Fort for ten years and he would reportedly respond to bugle calls.

Today, Sergeant Bozo’s pawprints can still be found in the cement pad in front of the Powder Magazine building on the Fort campus. The dog park at Fort Missoula Regional Park is also named in his honor.

A portion of the proceeds from the Dog Days Ultra benefits the Friends of The Historical Museum at Fort Missoula and helps keep Missoula County history alive for the education and enjoyment of the public.

New podcast episode: Why the Wye

The Wye is named for the “Y” shaped intersection of Highway 93 and Interstate 90, west of Missoula on the way to Frenchtown. In the last few years, the Wye has been a hotspot of activity, including a new public water system, two targeted economic development districts and the influx of new businesses.

How did this area become primed for growth in the Missoula Valley? Couldn’t a development moratorium help address concerns about affordability and preserving the culture that Missoula is known for?

Community and Economic Development Director Andrew Hagemeier joined Josh Slotnick on this episode to answer these questions and more.
