Chrysolina! Cry-so-line-uh! Chrysolina! We can’t stop saying it!!

Did you know that even medicinal plants can become noxious w**ds outside of their native habitat? That’s right, St. Johnswort (Hypericum perforatum), a plant popularly known for its medicinal uses, is a noxious w**d in parts of North America. It is a perennial that grows 1 to 3 feet tall. It has bright yellow star-shaped flowers and leaves that look “pin-pricked” when held up to the light. Luckily for us, we have a biocontrol agent for it as well! The Klamath Beetles (Chrysolina hyperici and C. quadrigemina), which we at MTBCP like to simply call Chrysolina, are a moderately effective biocontrol for the w**d.

The larvae feed at nighttime on young foliage in the early spring as the plant begins to bolt. Once they have pupated into adults in the early summer, they feed on the foliage of flowering plants. Once they finish feeding, the adults rest in the soil until fall rain stimulates them to lay eggs on any remaining plant foliage. The eggs then overwinter and hatch in the spring. However, if there is not enough rain to stimulate egg production, the adults will overwinter and lay eggs the following spring. The feeding done by the larvae can decimate populations of St. Johnswort, and the defoliation caused by adults inhibits the plant’s ability to photosynthesize.

Fun fact, the plant foliage makes the larvae of these beetles photosensitive, meaning they don’t want to be in the sun. As a result, the larvae primarily feed before sunrise. The adults can be seen out feeding during the heat of late spring and early summer.

This week MTBCP staff worked with NPS staff in Mammoth! Biocontrol is not currently a part of the w**d management plan in Mammoth, partly because they did not think biocontrol agents would be able to establish, survive, and impact their target w**ds in the Park due to harsh winter conditions. However, these little survivors have proven otherwise. Mecinus janthiniformis the Dalmatian stem weevil has never been released in the Park but has found its way there and can be found on the Dalmatian toadflax around Mammoth. It is still in low numbers but NPS staff wants to begin monitoring its presence and impact on toadflax.

A little peak behind the scenes - we're starting pre-release monitoring for the Oxeye Daisy rhizome-feeding moth "Dichrorampa aeratana". This agent is not yet an approved biocontrol in the USA, but is currently in the later stages of the regulation review process through USDA-APHIS. Hopefully this moth will be approved by 2027. Field Find Friday!

While collecting yellow toadflax weevils in Hamilton, we found this Gammarus lacustris, commonly known as a scud! These scuds are freshwater crustaceans that are important food sources for a variety of fish, birds, and amphibians. They themselves are detritivores, meaning they eat decaying organic matter and help to cycle nutrients in the ecosystem.

Ever wonder how we select biocontrol agents for noxious w**ds?

It all starts by conducting research in the w**d’s native range to identify organisms that utilize the plant. After identification, potential agents are brought into the lab where further testing is done to ensure they are host-specific, which means that they only utilize the w**d for food and as a home — they do not negatively impact any other plants except the target w**d. The organisms that show host-specificity enter the regulatory process through USDA-APHIS (Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service). This is a long and rigorous process where the results of the host-specificity testing are reviewed to further ensure the potential agent won’t result in impacts to other plants. Once approved, the agent can then be released in the field.

Take whitetop (Lepidium draba), for example:
Exploration in Eurasia (whitetop’s native range) began in 2001. The whitetop gall mite (Aceria drabae) was one of many potential agents that were identified. This potential agent underwent laboratory testing, which was completed in 2012. After an extensive review by USDA-APHIS, the agent was approved in 2018. Just one year later, Montana began the initial releases of this agent in 2019. Now it’s 2026 and we’re working to distribute this agent across Montana to help manage whitetop infestations.

Wildflower Wednesday!🌼

You may have noticed some white flowering plants this spring. While some may be native plants, some are noxious w**ds. Whitetop (Lepidium draba), a noxious w**d, and common yarrow (Achillea millefolium), a native plant, can be easy to misidentify, especially when you see their white flowers. Some ways to distinguish between these plants are their leaves & growth habits.
Whitetop, also called Hoary Cress, was introduced from Eurasia and often grows in dense monocultures. Stem leaves are alternately arranged, grayish-green, arrowhead shaped, and covered with soft white hairs. Whitetop blooms early in the spring.
Yarrow grows in a clumping pattern, often mixed in with other flora. Leaves are fern-like and feathery. Yarrow blooms in late spring throughout the summer. It's a native plant that is drought-tolerant and great for pollinators!

It's collection time again! Recently we have been collecting yellow toadflax stem weevils (shown in the video) and Dalmatian toadflax stem weevils. Both of which are great biocontrols for their respective plant species. Yesterday, 5 of us collected a total of over 15,000 Dalmatian toadflax stem weevils, which was way more than we had anticipated! We'll be sure to keep you all updated on what we are collecting and up to throughout the 2026 field season.

A toadflax by any other name would smell as sweet -- or not! Common names can get confusing as many plant species are colloquially called something rooted in regional history or lore, but once those plants start moving out of their home territory things get tricky. When looking at native versus invasive species, plants with similar common names are often grouped together even though they have drastically different taxonomic backgrounds and impacts on the environment. In the field Friday - last week was a busy one for the crew completing a series of pollinator surveys at our Common Crupina sites in Oregon and Idaho! Each of the 6 sites needed a minimum 20 min survey in the morning, afternoon, and evening (which made for a lot of driving). Many bugs were caught including some long horn bees, bumblebees, wasps, and more!
