Last night, in front of the Missoula City Council, our team was able to present our appeal of the HPC's denial of two Historic Preservation Permits. We thank the Council for their attention and diligent consideration of our case, which we believe shows without a doubt our application was treated unfairly and differently from others at Fort Missoula.

In today's Missoulian, property owner Max Wolf and project architect David Gray dispel some of the offensive myths that opponents have been percolating within the community for months. We will continue to push back on the mischaracterizations of this project and this property. At the end of the day, our goal remains the same: a restored Old Post Hospital, undertaken in a financially feasible manner.

Last spring, Missoula’s Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) denied an historic preservation permit to save and restore the Old Post Hospital. This was an unfortunate result of a flawed process, full

Good morning from the Old Post Hospital! Just a friendly reminder for those in the “Historic Fort Missoula Coalition” who may not understand private property rights: the Old Post Hospital and adjacent parcel are, in fact, privately owned, and the kiosks are not provided from them to remove our brochures and place their misinformation flyers inside. We will continue to remove them if necessary, but hope that they’ll change their behavior.

So, if you see the pamphlets on the left - misinformation. The blue “Save the Old Post Hospital” flyers on the right? Those contain the facts about our effort. Thank you!

Just a quick note - on Monday, City Council voted to postpone consideration of our appeal. Any further action will likely occur in early 2024. We appreciate the efforts of city staff and the Council to ensure a complete record and a fair process. More to come!

A developer's appeal of the Historic Preservation Commission's denial of their project to build housing on private property while restoring the historic hospital at Fort Missoula will be heard early next year, members of the City Council said on Monday.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be sharing facts about both the Old Post Hospital, and the proposal to save it, on our social media channels.

Fact #1 - The Old Post Hospital was completed in 1911, and saw patients of the 1918 Spanish influenza and childhood polio, and during World War II was used as the main hospital for the Alien Detention Camp. The building was vacant between 1947 and 1963, at which point it was sold by the Federal government and has since been privately owned. It has been on the list of "Missoula’s Most Endangered Historic Sites" since 2008, when the roof was noted as failing. That's why this effort to rehabilitate this grand building is so timely - and so needed.

If you haven't been able to visit one of our Open Houses, or just want to see the condition of the Old Post Hospital, view this great 3D walkthrough designed by Missoula small business Teleport Photography. You can take a guided tour of the building, or view individual rooms. It really demonstrates the costly challenge of restoring this historic structure.

Thank you to John Westenberg, who has worked in historic preservation for decades and even served on Missoula's HPC, for this thoughtful piece in the Missoula Current.

"The old Fort Hospital will be far more valued and historically informative if it is preserved and actively enjoyed, rather than allowed to molder in place and eventually be demolished."

"The hospital is deteriorating rapidly. If something is not done reasonably soon, it will be lost....As a result, the proposal under review is quite likely the last chance to save and restore it."

John Westenberg writes, It is disappointing to read statements from some opponents that allowing the hospital to gradually deteriorate in place, even to the point of demolition, is preferable to any proposal that requires some attendant development.
