SURVIVAL SWIMMING LESSONS
Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) goes beyond traditional swimming instruction, by teaching children aged 6 months - 6 years old ISR Self-Rescue techniques designed to help them survive should they reach the water alone. Most children who can crawl can learn to roll over onto their backs, breathe, and rest until help arrives. In 2010, the American Academy of Pediatrics chan
ged their position on survival swimming lessons as part of a family’s drowning prevention strategy. Ensure that the program you select for your child can safely and effectively teach your child this life-saving sequence. Founded by Dr. Harvey Barnett, behavioral psychologist, ISR is the product of over 46 years of development in the area of aquatic safety for infants and young children. The technology required to teach a child to handle themselves in the water is primarily found within operant conditioning and child psychology/development. The practical application of this must be custom tailored to your child’s cognitive and physical abilities. LESSONS FOR THE INFANT (6-14 months and crawling)
The goals for this age group involve the child learning to roll over onto their back and to attain and maintain a back float, rest and breathe when faced with an aquatic situation. The duration of private, individualized lessons (at 5 lessons per week/10 minutes per day) is approximately four to six weeks. Once skilled, all children use their aquatic skills fully clothed during the completion phase of the course! LESSONS FOR THE TODDLER AND YOUNG CHILD
(14 months and walking and older)
Children over the age of one year are taught to swim with their face in the water, recognize the need for air, roll over to a back float, rest, and breathe. After resting, the child flips over and continues swimming again. A child can perform this swim-float-swim sequence to reach a point of safety in the water, i.e. the wall or steps/ladder area of the pool. The confidence and self-esteem of these young swimmers is truly amazing! The duration of private, individualized lessons (at 5 lessons per week/10 minutes per day) will take an average of six weeks. Once skilled, all children use their aquatic skills fully clothed! WHAT IS THE COST OF LESSONS?
