These heirloom seeds have responded powerfully to our first planting. During the initial tilling, we found lots of worms 🪱, a great sign that we’re working with healthy, living soil, not just dirt.

We just had our first basil harvest of a couple of pounds, and there’s something about the fresh aroma of basil that makes our gardeners want to perform backflips! It also looks like we have dozens of Tabasco peppers 🌶️ forming, useful for a fun experiment with homemade salsa this fall.

And of course, we have hundreds of beans, numerous cucumbers 🥒, corn 🌽, bell peppers 🫑, and plenty of tomatoes 🍅 coming along. The squash are still a few weeks out!

One of the best parts of this food sovereignty garden has been sharing the harvest. We’ve enjoyed giving vegetables away at evening talking-circle meetings, NA and AA meetings, and sharing fresh produce with elders & relatives throughout the community.

Next year, we plan on upscaling this garden, as well as assisting the Bear Soldier District 🐻 with planting their food sovereignty garden at the new Food Distribution Center. Let’s continue to stack wins for a healthy and thriving recovery community!

As the hawk watches over our property, the ground bears more fruit and vegetables in silence. Meanwhile, we negotiated an economic agreement with the local elders. Yes, not only have we tapped into the food supply chain, but we are now dealing and trading on the ancient trade routes! (Strictly heirloom seeds) 😮‍💨
We may be willing to trade Waltham Butternut Squash for carrots? 🥕

Oh and did someone say “SOUP SEASON” is almost here?! 🍲

Congratulations to Shanity White Mountain on completing her Peer Support Training today!

We’re proud of her continued commitment to learning, growing, and accessing her experience to empower other relatives along their recovery journey. This is another powerful step forward for her and the work we’re building through Seeds of Eden and Bear Soldier District.

She has already brought hope and direction to many relatives in recovery on both Standing Rock and Cheyenne River, and this is simply another asset to assist her.

Way to go, Shanity! 🌱💚

Our “Four Sisters Garden” is beginning to manifest and illustrate plant mechanics. 🌽🫘🎃🌻 ⚙️

As you can see in the photos, while the corn grows vertically from the mound, the beans have wrapped their vines around the corn stalks, using them for support while also adding nitrogen to the soil.

The larger, wider leaves spread across the ground are the squash, which create a natural ground cover that helps prevent weeds from sprouting and growing while also helping the soil retain moisture.

Next year, we will plant sunflowers around the perimeter to help shield the corn, beans, and squash from the wind and other elements. Thank you LLoree TwoCrow for educating us on these ancient, genius, indigenous practices!

It’s pretty amazing to see how these plants can grow together, each serving a purpose and supporting the garden as a whole. 🌱

A gigantic THANK YOU to our loyal donors and to Scheels for enabling Seeds of Eden to provide some new kicks and backpacks for the much deserved kids at McLaughlin Mustangs District School.

We are grateful for every person and business that continues to believe in our community, beginning first with our kids and familes. Sometimes, something as simple as a new pair of shoes or a new backpack can help a child walk into school feeling more confident and prepared. Also, we enjoyed great conversation with the School administrators and parents regarding the interest and need for addiction recovery and mental health services. Prayers for the kids and staff in their journey this year!

👏🏼 Study hard, play hard, win hard 🏆

Day 1 of the South Dakota Behavioral Health Conference!

At SOE, we believe that synergy occurs when ideas, vision, and resources are exchanged and shared. Individually, we may be poor. But collectively, we are rich 🙏🏼 🌱
