Minocqua J1 School District

Minocqua J1 School District Minocqua J1 School District is made up of two schools: MHLT Elementary School and Lakeland Star Charter School.

The district serves 600 children in grades PreK-8 living in the towns of Minocqua, Hazelhurst, and Lake Tomahawk. A majority of the land in the district is described as rural recreational. It encompasses 350 square miles in Oneida County and is considered part of “The Northwoods” of North Central Wisconsin. Minocqua J1 is one of four elementary districts that feed into Lakeland Union High School.

Each district is administered by its own Board of Education. The tourism industry is the major source of revenue for the local economy. The numerous lakes and the abundance of recreational activities, as well as superb hospitality services, bring travelers to our community during all four seasons. Outside of the tourism industry, the largest employers include community health care, lumber manufacturing, and local retail stores. The combined population of our communities is approximately 9000, but during the summertime, it quadruples. A large number of retirees select this area for the quality of life it offers. The Minocqua J1 School district offers a comprehensive program of studies for our students. This includes support and enrichment services for any level of student need. The staff includes 63 teachers and support staff members, 2 administrators, 5 supervisors, 18 instructional aides, 5 custodians, and 6 food service workers. The district is administered by a five member board. Student achievement results are consistently above state and national averages. In general, our students score in the top 25% for students nationwide in Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. While our achievement scores exceed the state average, our per pupil costs are below state average and are the lowest in the Lakeland area. A wide range of extra curricular and after school activities is offered by the district, including summer school.

Yesterday the 7th grade Northwoods Way of Life class spent the afternoon at the Forest of Antlers Outfitters. There they learned about whitetail deer, health of a deer herd, made venison hamburgers, explored deer habitat, and went on a shed hunt. They had a couple lucky finds during the hunt! Thank you to the Forest of Antlers Outfitters for the invite and a great day in the woods!

Yesterday, a group of 4th and 6th graders attended an RVA event, Kids in Action, at the Rhinelander Courthouse. They learned about different levels of government, played Wisconsin trivia, and went through the process of creating a bill. Our students, along with students from two other schools "passed a bill" to have a four day school week. Many of them were bummed when it was ultimately vetoed.
